Women's Basketball Earns 71-48 Victory Over Boston University

THE BASICS:

  • Score: Holy Cross 71, Boston University 48

  • The Lead: Holy Cross junior guard Kate Gillespie (Washington, D.C.) tallied a team-high 16 points and connected on 3-of-4 from behind the arc to help lead the Crusaders to a 71-48 triumph over Boston University in Patriot League women's basketball action on Wednesday afternoon at Case Gymnasium.

TURNING POINT:

  • Holy Cross began its attack right from the opening tipoff, as it exploded on a 23-7 run over the first 11:43 of the contest to give it the 16-point lead. Boston University would not get any closer the remainder of the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Crusaders jumped out to the early 10-5 lead at the 14:50-mark of the first half. Holy Cross then increased its lead on a 13-2 rally to gain the 23-7 advantage with 8:17 on the clock. Gillespie scored five points during the surge, as the Crusaders forced six turnovers during the 6:23 stretch.
  • Holy Cross kept up the pressure and ended the half on a 10-7 spurt to head into the locker room with the 33-14 lead.
  • Holy Cross continued its success in the second half and pushed the lead to 24 points (46-22) at the 16:31-mark of the period. The Terriers cut into the deficit with a 8-2 spurt to make it an 18-point game (48-30), but a 6-0 run by the Crusaders put them back up by 24 (54-30; 10:48). Freshman guard Infiniti Thomas-Waheed (Newton, Mass.) scored five of the six points during the rally.
  • Boston University sliced the margin to 18 points (57-39) with 7:24 left in regulation, but that would be as close as the Terriers got, as the Crusaders would claim the eventual 71-48 victory.

INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS:

  • In addition to Gillespie for Holy Cross, junior forward Raquel Scott (Ridgewood, N.J.) recorded her seventh double-double of the season and the 26th of her career with 11 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
  • Holy Cross junior guard Lisa Mifsud (Erie, Pa.) tallied 11 points and a game-high five assists, while Thomas-Waheed posted 10 points and four rebounds.
  • Boston University was led by Kara Sheftic and Meghan Green, who recorded 17 and 10 points, respectively.

TEAM STATISTICS:

  • Holy Cross connected on 23-of-59 from the field (39.0%), while it canned 8-of-20 from downtown (40.0%). The Crusaders shot excellent from the free-throw line, as they went 17-of-19 (89.5%).
  • Boston University shot 34.6 percent from the floor (18-52) and 33.3 percent from behind the arc (3-of-9).
  • Holy Cross held the advantage in total rebounds (42-32), assists (18-16), and steals (8-6).
  • The Crusaders scored 26 points off 20 Boston University turnovers, while the Terriers only scored nine points off 15 Holy Cross miscues.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Holy Cross is now 11-3 all-time in games played against Boston University and 4-2 in road games versus the Terriers.
  • The Crusaders are now 20-5 all-time in Patriot League opening games and 9-3 in league-opening road matches.
  • This was the second time this season (Harvard, 11/25/14) that Holy Cross has had four players score double-digit points.
  • The 89.5 free-throw percentage for Holy Cross was its best clip from the charity stripe this season.
