Women's Basketball Falls To Western Michigan, 51-40

THE BASICS:

  • The Lead: Western Michigan's Miracle Woods and Alex Morton scored 17 and 16 points, respectively, to help lead the Broncos to a 51-40 victory over Holy Cross in the second game of the Seawolves Holiday Classic on Monday afternoon at the Island Federal Credit Union Arena.

TURNING POINT:

  • With the Crusaders on top 38-23 at the 15:56-mark of the second half, Western Michigan closed the game on a 28-2 rally to earn the 11-point, 51-40, victory. The Crusaders did not convert a field goal over the final 15:56, as the Broncos forced 18 Holy Cross turnovers in the second half.  

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Western Michigan opened the game with a 4-2 spurt, but the Crusaders countered with a 16-3 surge to gain the 18-7 lead at the 11:43-mark of the first half. Junior forward Kate Gillespie (Washington, D.C.) scored all eight of her points during the stretch, including a pair of three-pointers.
  • The Broncos scored four straight points to make the score 18-11 (10:34), but the Crusaders answered with five in a row to go ahead by 12 points (23-11) with 9:56 on the clock. Holy Cross kept the 12-point lead (30-18) with 3:52 left in the first half and held the 32-23 lead at the intermission.
  • Holy Cross jumped out to the 15-point advantage (38-23) at the 15:56 mark of the second half, before the Broncos began their comeback. Western Michigan scored 18 straight points to grab the 41-38 lead, before the Crusaders added two free throws to make the score 41-40 (6:27). The Broncos closed the game on a 10-0 run to make the score its final, 51-40.

INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Crusader junior guard Lisa Mifsud (Erie, Pa.) led the Crusaders with nine points and four rebounds, while junior forward Raquel Scott (Ridgewood, N.J.) chipped in with eight points and seven rebounds. Gillespie added eight points for Holy Cross.
  • Woods finished with 17 points and nine rebounds for Western Michigan, while Marquisha Harris added seven points and 11 rebounds.

TEAM STATISTICS:

  • Holy Cross was limited to 12-of-47 shooting in the contest (25.5%), as it shot 10.5 percent from the floor in the second half (2-of-19). The Crusaders did not connect on a three-pointer in the second half, as they shot 6-of-22 for the game (27.3%).
  • Western Michigan hit on 13-of-44 from the field (29.5%), while it drained 2-of -7 from behind the arc (28.6%).
  • The Broncos converted on 23-of-33 from the charity stripe (69.7%), while Holy Cross hit 10-of-14 from the free-throw line (71.4%).
  • Western Michigan held the advantage in total rebounds (40-36), steals (14-6) and points in the paint (22-8).

  • Holy Cross will begin its Patriot League slate on Wednesday, Dec. 31, when it travels down the Mass Pike to take on Boston University at 12:00 p.m.
