Women's Hockey Downs Salve Regina, 7-3

THE BASICS

Records: Holy Cross (3-0-0, 1-0-0 ECAC East); Salve Regina (0-1-0, 0-1-0 ECAC East)
Location: Middletown, R.I. (St. George's School Ice Rink) 
The Lead: Seniors Francesca Panarelli (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and Mary Klimasewiski (Cochester, Conn.) scored two goals each as the Holy Cross women's hockey team defeated Salve Regina 7-3 to begin ECAC East play on Friday night. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Nine minutes into the first period, Holy Cross pressured Salve Regina with their speed as Panarelli received a pass up the middle from senior Nicole Giannino (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and whipped a wrist shot past the reach of Salve Regina goalie Kelsey Baldwin to take the lead 1-0 (8:49).
  • Several minutes later, senior assistant captain Kate Reilly (Natick, Mass.) came around the back of the net to find senior Jessica Frascotti (Needham, Mass.) in front as she found an opening in the left side of the net past Baldwin, giving Holy Cross the 2-0 advantage (10:10). 
  • Salve Regina took advantage of a Holy Cross power-play at the beginning of the second period as Taylor Shepherd scored a shorthanded goal that landed out of the reach of senior goalie Alexandra Stevenson (Norwood, N.Y.). The pass from Michaela Chiuccariello  put the Seahawks on the board 2-1 (3:16).
  • The Crusaders had control over the Seahawks for the rest of the second period, outshooting Salve Regina 19-4 and scoring four times. 
  • Panarelli began the Crusaders' attack as she scored her second goal of the game at 11:29 of the second period on an unassisted goal putting Holy Cross up 3-1. 
  • Three minutes later, Giannino received a pass from sophomore Izzy Bagi (Branford, Conn.) as she netted her second goal of the season to give Holy Cross the 4-1 lead (14:55). 
  • Freshman Kara Violette (Biddeford, Maine) scored her second goal of the season and was assisted by junior Mackenzie Boardman (Anchorage, Alaska) to give the Crusaders the four goal advantage at 5-1 (15:51). 
  • With four minutes remaining in the second period, Klimasewski struck with her first goal of the season at 16:26 to give Holy Cross the 6-1 lead going into the third. Klimasewiski began the third period with her second goal that went past the reach of Baldwin as the Crusaders increased their lead to 7-1 (8:17). 
  • The Seahawks took advantage of another Holy Cross power-play and gained some momentum in the third period on a pass from Amanda Cronin to Sarah Markey that went past the reach of Stevenson, putting Salve Regina on the board 7-2 (10:01). 
  • Salve Regina's Britani Dunbar added the Seahawk's third goal of the game that was assisted by Molly O'Sullivan as the Seahawks cut the lead to 7-3 (11:06). 
  • Stevenson was able to silence the Seahawks in the remaining minutes of the third as Holy Cross sealed their first ECAC East victory. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • Stevenson had 23 saves for the Crusaders , while Baldwin had 30 saves for the Seahawks. 
  • Holy Cross held the advantage in shots on goal (37-26). The Seahawks were 1-4 on the power play, while the Crusaders were 0-3. 

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE 

  • Klimasewiski's back-to-back goals were her first two goals of the season. 
  • Giannino now leads the team with four goals.

  • The Crusaders return to the ice as they get set to host ECAC East foes St. Anselm on Friday, Nov. 14 at 7:00 p.m. and Franklin Pierce on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 2:05 p.m.
