Women's Basketball Earns 73-69 Win Over Georgetown

  • The Lead: Holy Cross junior forward Raquel Scott (Ridgewood, N.J.) recorded her 21st career double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds to help lead the Crusaders to a 73-69 triumph over Georgetown at the final round of the Basketball Hall of Fame Women's Challenge on Sunday afternoon at Mohegan Sun Arena. Scott was named the game's Most Valuable Player.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After Georgetown began the game with a three-pointer, the Crusaders embarked on a 17-4 scoring run to gain the 17-7 lead at the 14:25-mark of the first half. Scott scored eight of her points during the rally, while junior guard Lisa Mifsud (Erie, Pa.) chipped in with three.
  • The Hoyas cut the deficit to three points (22-19) with 7:13 on the clock, but a 10-4 surge by Holy Cross gave it the 32-23 lead (4:31). Georgetown outscored the Crusaders 6-4 to end the half, but Holy Cross held the 36-29 lead at intermission.
  • The two teams went back-and-forth over the first seven minutes of the second half, as the Crusaders held the 49-40 lead at the 12:53-mark of the stanza.
  • Holy Cross pushed its advantage to 11 points (63-52) with 6:56 on the clock, but Georgetown countered with a 12-2 rally to make it a one-point game (65-64) with 3:02 left in regulation.
  • A pair of free throws by Scott gave the Crusaders the 67-64 lead (2:47), but Georgetown answered with a layup on the other end to make the score 67-66 (2:30).
  • The teams traded possessions twice over the next minute, but Mifsud put Holy Cross ahead by three points (69-66) on a driving layup with 41 seconds on the clock.
  • Holy Cross went up by six points (72-66) with 29 seconds left, but a three-pointer by Georgetown made it a one-possession game (72-69) with 19 ticks left in regulation. Freshman guard Katie Doherty (Holbrook, N.Y.) hit a free throw to make the score its final, (73-69).

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Mifsud recorded a team-high 18 points to go along with six rebounds and three assists. Doherty scored a career-best 13 points and canned two three-pointers, while junior center Molly Hourigan (Memphis, N.Y.) posted eight points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots.
  • Both senior forward Clare Sullivan (Belmont, Mass.) and junior guard Kate Gillespie (Washington, D.C.) scored seven points apiece.
  • Katie McCormick (19), Logan Battle (13) and Dorothy Adomako (10) of Georgetown all scored double-digit points, while Dominique Vitalis hauled in a game-high 14 rebounds.
  • Georgetown shot 39.1 percent from the field (27-69), while the Crusaders connected on 23-of-64 from the floor (35.9%).
  • Holy Cross canned 31.6 percent from behind the arc (6-19), while the Hoyas hit 5-of-18 from downtown (27.8%).
  • The Crusaders drained 21-of-33 from the charity stripe (63.6%), while Georgetown converted on 76.9 percent from the free-throw line (10-13).
  • Holy Cross held the advantage in total rebounds (50-45), assists (15-10) and points off turnovers (15-10).

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Scott recorded her 700th collegiate point and 500th career rebound in the contest and now has 708 points and 507 rebounds in her three-year career. Her 12 rebounds were a season-high.
  • Doherty set a career-high with 13 points with seven coming from the free-throw line.
  • Hourigan tied a season-high with four blocked shots and now has 120 in her career, while she tied her personal-best mark of 10 rebounds.  
  • Holy Cross is now 2-0 all-time versus Georgetown and is 14-17 all-time in games versus teams currently in the BIG EAST conference.
