Women's Hockey Shuts Out Wesleyan, 4-0

THE BASICS
Score: Holy Cross 4, Wesleyan 0
Records: Holy Cross (7-1-1) ; Wesleyan (2-4-0)
Location: Hart Center (Worcester, Mass.)
The Lead:  Seniors Mary Klimasewiski (Conchester, Conn.), Rachel Miller (Jackson, Mich.), Nicole Giannino (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and freshman Lauren Abbenante (Cranston, R.I.) all scored for the Crusaders as Holy Cross shut out Wesleyan, 4-0 on Sunday night at the Hart Center in non-conference women's hockey action.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Surrounded by Wesleyan defenders, Klimasewiski was able to drive the puck down the middle and sent a wrist shot past the reach of Wesleyan goalie Connie Rivard to give the Holy Cross the 1-0 (4:33).
  • Senior captain Francesca Panarelli (Shrewsbury, Mass.) crossed the puck over to junior captain Taylor McGee (Pearl River, N.Y.), as she found Miller open in front of the net. Miller launched the puck by Rivard to put Holy Cross up 2-0 (17:57) with three minutes remaining in the first period.
  • On a Holy Cross power play, sophomore Erin Hall (Pembroke, Mass.) found sophomore Izzy Bagi (Brandford, Conn.) open in front of the net. Bagi's  initial shot was blocked by Rivard, as she crossed the puck to Abbenante off the rebound and found the lower left corner. This gave Holy Cross a comfortable 3-0 lead in the second period (17:57).
  • The Crusaders continued their momentum into the third period, putting pressure on the Cardinals.
  • 12 minutes into the third saw Holy Cross take a 4-0 lead over Wesleyan. Caught up in a crowd of Wesleyan defenders in front of the net, freshman Emily Lissner (Woburn, Mass.) found junior Kati Goguen (Acton, Mass.), who then connected with Giannino. Giannino was able to push the puck underneath Rivard to put the Crusaders up 4-0 (11:25).
  • Even with eight shots on goal in the third, Wesleyan was unable to get the puck past senior goalie Krista Manzanares (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.), as she helped secure the 4-0 Crusader victory.
