Women's Basketball Falls In Overtime To Harvard, 79-76

  • The Lead: Holy Cross junior forward Raquel Scott (Ridgewood, N.J.) scored a game-high 23 points to go along with seven rebounds, but the Crusaders fell in overtime to Harvard, 79-76, in non-conference women's basketball action on Tuesday evening at Purcell Pavilion. The game was the third round of the Basketball Hall of Fame Women's Challenge hosted in Notre Dame, Ind.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Harvard jumped out with the 9-4 lead at the 17:02-mark of the first half. The Crimson pushed the margin to 10 points (21-11) midway through the stanza, but layups by Scott and junior guard Lisa Mifsud (Erie, Pa.) cut the deficit to 21-15 (9:59).
  • The Crimson went on a 13-7 run over the next six-plus minutes (3:12) to gain their largest lead of the half, 34-22. The Crusaders finished the half on a 5-2 spurt to head into the locker room trailing Harvard, 36-27.
  • Holy Cross jumped out with a 7-3 run early in the second half to make the score 39-34. Harvard responded with a 13-6 run to gain the 52-40 lead at the 10:36-mark of the second half.
  • The Crusaders, however, slowly chipped away at the deficit and went on an 18-6 rally over the next 5:19 to tie the game at 58-58 on the back of a Mifsud three-pointer. Scott recorded seven points during the second half surge.
  • The Crimson answered and went up by four points on two occasions over the next two minutes, but the Crusaders would keep the game within one possession over the final minute.
  • After Harvard hit a pair of free throws to go up by three points with 11 seconds left, junior guard Kate Gillespie (Washington, D.C.) canned a three-pointer with 4.7 ticks on the clock to force overtime with the game tied at 69-69.
  • The lead exchanged hands six times over the first four minutes of the overtime, but the Crusaders held the 76-74 lead with 1:00 left in the period after a Gillespie trey. Harvard, however, answered with a three-pointer to gain the 77-76 lead with 35 seconds to go. After the Crusaders failed to score on their next possession, the Crimson hit a pair of free throws to make the score its final, 79-76.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • In addition to Scott for Holy Cross, Mifsud recorded a game-high 23 points, five rebounds and five assists and canned 5-of-8 from behind the arc. Gillespie scored 16 points, including four from downtown.
  • Senior forward Emily Parker (Johnston, Iowa) tallied 10 points and four caroms.
  • Harvard was led by Ali Curtis, who scored 22 points, while Temi Fagbenle recorded 11 points and a game-high 17 rebounds.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Mifsud tied career-highs in points, rebounds and three-pointers made.
  • The Crusaders connected on 46.2 percent of their shots from the floor (30-65), while Harvard hit on 27-of-64 from the field (42.2%). The Crimson hit 12-of-25 from behind the arc (48.0%), while Holy Cross canned 10-of-25 from downtown (40.0%).
  • Holy Cross held the advantages in points in the paint (36-24) and second chance points (12-7), while Harvard led in total rebounds (39-36) and assists (20-19).
