Violette Leads Women's Hockey To 4-3 Victory Over St. Michael's

THE BASICS

Location: C. Douglas Cairns Arena (South Burlington, Vt.)
The Lead: Freshman Kara Violette (Biddeford, Maine) scored two goals for the Crusaders, including the game-winner,  as Holy Cross sealed a 4-3 victory over St. Michael's at the C. Douglas Cairns Arena on Saturday afternoon in ECAC East women's hockey action.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Neither team was able to get the puck between the pipes in the first period as Holy Cross had 15 shots on goal, while St. Michael's had six.
  • St. Michael's jumped out to a 1-0 lead seven minutes into the second period as Erin Dwyer was able to get the puck past senior goalie Krista Manzanares (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) and was assisted by Emily Loebs.
  • However, Holy Cross answered at 17:03 on a goal by senior Nicole Giannino (Bay Shore, N.Y.), assisted by sophomore Izzy Bagi  (Branford, Conn.) to even the score at 1-1
  • The Crusaders were not done scoring as they jumped out to the 2-1 lead (18:29) with two minutes remaining in the second period on a goal from senior Mary Klimasewiski (Conchester, Conn.), assisted by senior captain Francesca Panarelli (Shrewsbury, Mass.).
  • St. Michael's was able to get back in the game as they tied the score 2-2 in the early minutes of the third period as Amanda Donahue scored on the Holy Cross power play and was assisted by Amanda Kempainen.
  • The Purple Knights took their second lead of the game at 3-2 on a goal by Kempanien, assisted by Fernanda Saavedra and Athena Akiki.
  • The Crusaders did not let the Purple Knights gain any more momentum as Violette scored her first of two goals on a St. Michael's power play as she was assisted by junior captain Taylor McGee (Pearl River, N.Y.) and Panarelli, tying the game 3-3 (15:26).
  • The Crusaders were able to silence the Purple Knights' sticks as the game remained tied 3-3.
  • With 26 seconds left in the third period, Violette put the Crusaders up 4-3 on an unassisted goal (19:34), and secured the Holy Cross victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Manzanares had 13 saves for the Crusaders, while Tina Frasca had 39 saves for the Purple Knights.
  • Holy Cross was 1-3 on the power play, as St. Michael's was 1-3 as well.
  • Holy Cross held the advantage in shots on goal (43-16).
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
  • Holy Cross remains undefeated against St. Michael's, increasing the overall all-time record to 32-0.
  • Winning six of the first seven games marks the fourth time within the last eleven seasons that the Crusaders have won six games to begin the year.
  • Through seven games, Giannino and Violette lead the team with six goals each, as Violette leads the team in assists with six, 12 points and plus/minus at +10.

  • The Crusaders return to ice for back-to-back non-conference games on Saturday, Nov. 29 as they travel to Bowdoin for a 7:00 p.m. matchup, as they return home on Sunday, Nov. 30 to host Wesleyan  at 6:05 p.m.
