Women's Basketball Falls To Dartmouth, 69-53

  • The Lead: Dartmouth freshman guard Fanni Szabo scored a game-high 31 points to go along with seven rebounds to help lead the Big Green to a 69-53 win over Holy Cross in non-conference women's basketball action on Thursday evening at Leede Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • With the score tied at 7-7 (13:59), Dartmouth went on a 10-2 run to gain the 17-9 lead at the 10:07-mark of the first half.
  • Holy Cross, however, held the Dartmouth offense without a point over the next 8:34 and went on a 12-0 rally to gain the 21-17 lead (1:44). Junior center Molly Hourigan (Memphis, N.Y.) scored four points during the stretch.
  • The Big Green ended their scoring drought and finished the half on a 5-0 run to head into the locker room with the 22-21 edge.
  • In the second half, Szabo led the Big Green on a 10-4 spurt to start the stanza to gain the 32-25 lead (17:46), as she scored all 10 points for Dartmouth during the rally. The Big Green pushed the advantage to 12 points (39-27) at the 13:53-mark of the second half, before a junior guard Lisa Mifsud (Erie, Pa.) three-pointer cut the deficit to single digits (39-30).
  • Dartmouth, however, embarked on an 11-4 run to gain the 16-point, 50-34 lead with 10:27 on the clock. The Crusaders sliced the margin to 10 points (56-46) with 3:57 to go, but seven straight points by the Big Green gave them their largest lead of the game (63-46) at the 3:03-mark of the second half. Holy Cross brought the deficit to 13 points twice over the final minutes, but Dartmouth would go on to claim the 69-53 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Holy Cross was led by Mifsud, who recorded a team-high 15 points to go along with four assists and four rebounds. Junior guard Kate Gillespie (Washington, D.C.) tallied 12 points and four caroms, while Hourigan posted 10 points, five rebounds and four blocked shots.
  • Crusader freshman guard Katie Doherty (Holbrook, N.Y.) hauled in a team-high eight rebounds, while senior forward Emily Parker (Johnston, Iowa) saw her first action of the season and registered five points and six boards.
  • In addition to Szabo for Dartmouth, Lakin Roland posted a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds.
  • Dartmouth shot 34.4 percent from the floor (22-64), while the Crusaders connected on 18-of-57 from the field (31.6%).
  • The Crusaders canned 33.3 percent from long range (5-15), while they limited the Big Green to 4-of-14 from behind the arc (28.6%).
  • Dartmouth went 21-of-25 from the free throw line (84.0%), while Holy Cross shot 75.0 percent from the charity stripe (12-16).
  • The Big Green held advantages in total rebounds (47-36) and steals (11-6), while they forced 23 Holy Cross turnovers.
