  • The Lead: Holy Cross junior guard Lisa Mifsud (Erie, Pa.) tallied a game-high 19 points and seven assists, but the Crusaders fell to Yale, 83-70, in non-conference women's basketball action on Tuesday evening at the John J. Lee Amphitheater.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Yale jumped out to the early 10-2 lead less than four minutes into the contest (16:39). The Bulldogs increased their advantage to 10 points (17-7) at the 13:39-mark of the first half, but back-to-back jumpers by freshman guard Infiniti Thomas-Waheed (Newton, Mass.) cut the deficit to 17-11 (12:34).
  • The Bulldogs went on a 9-4 run to gain the 26-15 lead (8:13) on the back of a Katie Werner old-fashioned three-point play. Holy Cross, however, slowly chipped into the margin and went on a 15-7 spurt to make the score 33-30 (3:18).
  • Yale went back up by five points (35-30) on the next possession, but a trey by Thomas-Waheed and a pair of free throws by freshman guard Shannon Druck (New Freedom, Pa.) tied the game at 35-35 with 1:28 on the clock. The Bulldogs scored with 1:06 left in the half and went into the locker room with the 37-35 lead.
  • Yale jumped up by four points (42-38) less than two minutes into the second half, but the Crusaders responded with a 9-0 rally to gain 47-42 lead (15:14). Thomas-Waheed had five points during the Holy Cross run.
  • The Bulldogs responded with five quick points to tie the game at 47-47, but an and-one by freshman forward Amy Hasenauer (Greece, N.Y.) put Holy Cross up by three (50-47).
  • Yale countered and embarked on a momentum-shifting 13-0 surge to gain the 60-50 lead with 9:56 on the clock. The Bulldogs increased their margin to 14 points on multiple occasions over the next eight-plus minutes and went up by its largest lead of the game (81-64) with 41 seconds left in regulation.
  • Holy Cross closed the game on a 6-2 run to make the score its final, 83-70.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • In addition to Mifsud for Holy Cross, Thomas-Waheed recorded a career-best 16 points on 7-of-13 shooting and added four blocks and a pair of steals.
  • Junior guard Kate Gillespie (Washington, D.C.) tallied 12 points on four three-pointers and hauled in four boards.
  • Yale was led by Jen Berkowitz, who registered a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Werner (16), Sarah Halejian (12) and Tamara Simpson (12) all posted double-digit points.
  • The Crusaders shot 50.9 percent from the field (29-57), as Yale connected on 30-of-74 from the floor (40.5%).
  • Holy Cross canned 7-of-18 from long range (38.9%), as the Bulldogs were limited to 23.1 percent from behind the arc (3-13).
  • Yale hit 20-of-25 from the charity stripe (80%), as the Crusaders went 5-of-9 from the line (55.6%).
  • Yale held large margins in total rebounds (51-26), second chance points (24-4) and points in the paint (50-28).

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Holy Cross freshmen Druck, Hasenauer, Thomas-Waheed and Tricia Byrne (Dunmore, Pa.) all recorded their first collegiate points tonight.
  • Mifsud's 19 points were a season-high.
