  • The Lead: Dartmouth's Ali Savage scored the game-winning goal 2:07 into the first overtime to help lead the Big Green to a 5-4 victory over Holy Cross in non-conference field hockey action on Monday afternoon at the Chase AstroTurf Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Holy Cross freshman forward Maureen Connolly (New Canaan, Conn.) recorded the game's first goal in the seventh minute (6:48). With an assist from senior midfielder Colby Lohrey (West Simsbury, Conn.), Connolly scored from 10 yards out to give the Crusaders the 1-0 lead.
  • Dartmouth earned the 2-1 advantage with back-to-back goals in the 16th (15:10) and 34th minutes (33:17) by Clare Detrick-Yee and Heather Zezzo, respectively.
  • The Crusaders knotted the contest at 2-2 just over five minutes into the second half (41:09), as freshman forward Rachel Lapar (Wolfeboro, N.H.) scored off an assist by junior Katy Cronin (Franklin, Mass.).
  • Less than two minutes later (42:52), the Big Green grabbed the lead back with a goal by Anna Rowthorn-Apel on a penalty stroke.
  • Holy Cross, however, capitalized on a penalty stoke of its own at the 44:17 mark of the contest off the stick of junior midfielder Kaitlyn Murray (Farmington, Conn.) to tie the game at 3-3.
  • With less than eight minutes on the clock (61:45), Connolly picked up her second goal of the contest during a scrum on a penalty corner to put Holy Cross on top 4-3.
  • Dartmouth, however, earned a penalty corner as time expired and capitalized with the game-tying goal (70:00) off the stick of Anna Ewasechko to force the overtime period.
  • In the 73rd minute (72:07), Savage clinched the victory with a shot from 10 yards out to make the score its final, 5-4.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Dartmouth goalkeeper Ellen Meyer made seven saves in the contest, while Holy Cross senior goalie Kat Matchett (Maple Glen, Pa.) and sophomore netminder Maya Langman (Crozet, Va.) combined to make six stops for the visitors.
  • Both teams posted 19 total shots and 11 shots on goal, while the Big Green held the 7-6 edge in penalty corners.
  • Savage recorded a game-high five shots on net, while Connolly registered a team-best three shots on target.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • The two goals by Connolly give her a team-high six this season, which are the most recorded by a Holy Cross freshman since Tara Welsh scored seven goals during the 2003 campaign.
  • The goal by Murray was her third of the year and the fourth of her career, while Lapar's goal was the first of her collegiate career.
