PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The women's ice hockey team defeated Plymouth State tonight at Hanaway Rink by a score of 3-2. The Crusaders elevated their record to 11-5-1 on the season and 6-2-1 in ECAC East action while the Panthers fall to 3-13-1 and 1-7-1 in the conference.
In the first meeting of the year between the two teams Holy Cross got on the board first. Junior Jessica Frascotti (Needham, Mass.) notched the first goal nine minutes into the game and it was her first goal of the season. The assists came way of senior Kylee Sullivan (Arlington, Mass.) and junior Rachel Miller (Jackson, Mich.). Sullivan recorded her first assist of the season and has a total of six points. Miller posted her sixth assist on the year. With two minutes left in the period junior Nicole Giannino (Bay Shore, N.Y.) scored her ninth goal of the season. Junior Chelsea Monahan (Cherry Hill, N.J.) and freshman Izzy Bagi (Branford, Conn.) were credited with the assists. Monahan and Bagi now have a combined seven assists on the season.
At the end of one Holy Cross claimed a 2-0 lead over Plymouth State. The Crusaders held a 12-5 shot advantage.
The Panthers came out strong in the second stanza as they cut the deficit 2-1 just two minutes into the period. Freshman Justine Gelinas earned the goal and sophomore Marisa Zamrock posted the assist. Holy Cross junior Mary Klimasewiski (Cochester, Conn.) got the Crusaders on the board 17:12 into the period with her sixth goal of the year. Senior co-captain Amanda Gallagher (Park Ridge, Ill.) and Frascotti paved the way for the assists. Gallagher's third of the year and Frascotti's second point in the game. Holy Cross maintained a 3-1 lead over Plymouth State through two periods.
Plymouth State got back into the thick of things in the final period. Junior Kelsey Cosby scored 5:41 into the third period to get the Panthers within one goal of the Crusaders with her first goal of the season. Sophomore Kelsey Lynch earned the assist as it was her fourth of the year. The Panthers did as much as they could to rally back but the Crusaders held their ground and came away with the victory.
Junior goaltender Alexandra Stevenson (Norwood, N.Y.) posted her sixth win of the season as she recorded a total of 14 saves in the game. Stevenson now holds a mark of 6-2-1 on the year. Senior net minder Ali Ponte had a stellar performance between the pipes as she recorded 30 saves on the night.
Holy Cross is back in action on Saturday, Jan. 25 as they travel to Gorham, Maine to take on Southern Maine. Game time is slated for 1:00 p.m.
