WORCESTER, Mass. - Three members of the Holy Cross men's lacrosse team earned Patriot League weekly awards following the Crusaders' double overtime win over Hofstra on Friday. Senior Michael Rincon was named Defensive Player of the Week, freshman Shane McDonnell the Faceoff Specialist of the Week, and senior JR Long the Goalkeeper of the Week.
Rincon finished Friday's contest at Hofstra with three caused turnovers and a game-leading five ground ball pickups. The game marked the seventh time in his Holy Cross career that he forced three or more turnovers in a game.
McDonnell went an incredible 12-for-16 (.750) at the faceoff x in Friday's win. Two of McDonnell's faceoff wins came at the start of each overtime period, giving the Crusaders' possession to open both extra periods.
Long posted his second-straight game with 13 saves, finishing the contest at Hofstra with an 7.27 goals-against average and .619 save percentage, allowing just eight goals in 66 minutes of play. The game marked Long's seventh career game with 13+ saves and his career-low in goals allowed. Long ranks second in the Patriot League in saves (26) and saves per game (13.00) through the first two games of the season.
Rincon, McDonnell, Long, and the Crusaders (1-1) return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 11 when they travel to Merrimack for a 6 p.m. matchup.
