Botek nets double overtime winner as men’s lacrosse downs Hofstra

Box Score FARMINGDALE, N.Y. - The Holy Cross men's lacrosse team downed Hofstra, 9-8, in double overtime at Rams Field at Farmingdale State College Friday afternoon.

With the win, Holy Cross improves to 1-1 on the season, while Hofstra also moves to 1-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Senior Will Messineo opened the scoring three minutes into the contest before Hofstra tied the game.
  • Back-to-back goals from junior Jude Lynch and freshman Aedan Cassidy gave Holy Cross the 3-1 lead, before Hofstra ended the opening quarter with a goal.
  • The lone goal of the second quarter - with nine minutes to play in the frame - went the way of Hofstra to tie the game at 3-3 going into the halftime break.
  • Sophomore Owen Tunney, Lynch, and junior Ryan Botek each found the back of the net in the third, but the Crusaders were outscored 5-3 in the frame, leading to a 8-6 Hofstra lead going into the final quarter of regulation.
  • Junior Jon-Luke Duley scored his first of the game to bring the Crusaders within one with 11 minutes to play. Two minutes later, Lynch picked up his third of the game on the man-up advantage to tie the contest at 8-8.
  • Botek proved to be the hero in the second overtime period, netting the winner just over two minutes into the extra period.

BEYOND THE BOX:
  • Senior JR Long recorded 13 saves in the contest, finishing the afternoon with a .619 save percentage.
  • Senior Michael Rincon led both sides with five ground balls and tied with fellow senior Julian Jenkins for the game-lead in caused turnovers with three.
  • Freshman Shane McDonnell was dominate at the face-off x, winning 12 of 16 draws.

UP NEXT:
  • Holy Cross will take a short break before traveling to Merrimack on Wednesday, Feb. 11. Opening face-off in North Andover, Mass. is set for 6 p.m.
