Men's lacrosse falls in season opener to Providence

WORCESTER, Mass. — The Holy Cross men's lacrosse team fell to Providence, 15-10, in its season opener Saturday afternoon at the St. Ignatius Indoor Practice Facility.

Holy Cross opens its season at 0-1, while Providence opens at 1-0.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Providence scored first 1:06 into the contest, but the lead did not last long as junior Jude Lynch tied things up 1:30 later. Providence once again took the lead, but back-to-back goals by sophomore Owen Tunney and senior Will Messineo gave the Crusaders the 3-2 lead halfway through the opening quarter.
  • The two sides traded goals through the rest of the first quarter, with junior Jon-Luke Duley and sophomore Andrew Ottomanelli grabbing their first goals of the season for Holy Cross, ending the period in a 5-5 deadlock. 
  • The first half ended in an 8-8 tie with both sides picking up three goals. Senior Damien Ramondo netted his first of the game in the frame, while Duley and Messineo grabbed their second.
  • Providence dominated the third quarter, taking the 12-8 lead into the final frame, tacking on three more in the fourth quarter.
  • Freshman Aedan Cassidy picked up his first two collegiate goals - both on the man-advantage - to give Holy Cross their ninth and tenth goals of the contest.

BEYOND THE BOX:
  • Senior JR Long got the nod in net for the Crusaders, recording 13 saves.
  • Senior Michael Rincon tied for the game-lead in caused turnovers with two.
  • Long and junior Tim Golden led the Crusaders with three ground balls each.

UP NEXT:
  • Holy Cross will travel to Hempstead, N.Y. to face Hofstra for the first time in program history on Friday, Feb. 6.
  • Game time is set for 3 p.m.
