WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross men's ice hockey head coach
Bill Riga has announced two of the players that will serve as team captains for the 2024-25 season. Defenseman
Matt Shatsky will serve as the captain, while forward
Liam McLinskey will be an assistant captain.
"We waited this long to name captains to evaluate, take stock and make sure we get this right," said Riga of the process. "What became very clear, is that
Matt Shatsky will be our captain and wearing the "C" for the 24-25 season."
Shatsky, a rising senior from Winnipeg, Manitoba, will wear a letter for the first time in his collegiate career. Shatsky played in 37 games in the 2023-24 season, recording a career-high 21 points on two goals and 19 assists, placing him fifth in assists and seventh in points by a defenseman in a single season in the program's Division I era.
"It was also clear, through the voting process that
Liam McLinskey would be wearing an 'A'," continued Riga. "These two have demonstrated, on and off, the ice that they should be the ones to lead us through the summer and into next year."
McLinskey, a native of Pearl River, N.J., earns the honor after a stellar season that saw him record 47 points in 29 games and become the program's first Hobey Baker Top 10 nominee. The reigning Atlantic Hockey Player of the Year and Scoring Champion, McLinskey was also named a Second Team East All-American and NEHWA All-Star.
"We will round out the full leadership group in early October, prior to our first game to allow for further growth and evaluation," said Riga. "We have several players who are worthy, received votes and would be good fits in their own ways. Those selections will become clearer as we move forward."
