Nine Crusaders record points as men’s lacrosse falls short at Bucknell

LEWISBURG, Pa. — The Holy Cross men's lacrosse team fell to Bucknell, 12-9, on Saturday at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.

Senior Matt Major and sophomore Will Messineo led the way for the Crusaders (2-3, 0-1 PL) with two goals each. Junior Henry Sheehan and freshman Ryan Botek recorded three points each on a goal and two assists.

Bucknell (2-3, 1-0 PL) was led by Cam Doolan, who posted five points on four goals and an assist, and Connor Davis who netted five goals.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Bucknell got on the board first just over three minutes into the contest. The lead did not last long for the Bison as senior Matt Major found the back of the net just under two minutes later off a quick pass from freshman Luca Ward. Bucknell then regained the lead by scoring two goals over the next three minutes.
  • Freshman Ryan Botek picked up his first Patriot League goal with 3:55 remaining in the first quarter to cut the Bucknell lead to 3-2.
  • The teams traded goals in the last two minutes of the quarter, with Major picking up his second goal of the contest to make it 4-3 Bucknell at the end of the first.
  • Bucknell opened the second quarter with a four-goal run before junior Henry Sheehan halted the run with his first goal of the season.
  • Sophomore William Stahl opened the second half with his ninth goal of the season.
  • The Crusaders went on a four-goal run of their own to tie the game at 9-9 with nine minutes remaining in regulation. Freshmen Bo Webster and Jude Lynch picked up a goal each, while Messineo netted two in the stretch.
  • Bucknell scored three over the final 6:26 to end the game with the 12-9 win.

BEYOND THE BOX:
  • Senior Dawson Friers recorded 14 saves in his 58:25 minutes of work.
  • Senior Connor DePeiro went 13-23 at the X and picked up a team-leading seven ground balls.
  • Sophomore Michael Rincon recorded a game-high six turnovers.

UP NEXT:
  • Holy Cross will continue their Patriot League schedule next Saturday, March 9, when they travel to no. 5 Army.
  • Game time is set for 12 p.m. at Michie Stadium in West Point, N.Y.
