Women's basketball defeats UMass Lowell

LOWELL, Mass. — The Holy Cross women's basketball team defeated UMass Lowell, 61-49, in an out-of-conference matchup on Saturday, Nov. 9.

Junior guard Simone Foreman led Holy Cross (1-1) with a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds. Three others scored in double figures, with junior guard Kaitlyn Flanagan scoring 12 points and tallying six assists; junior forward Meg Cahalan and senior forward Lindsay Berger had 10 points each. 

The Crusader offense capitalized on 22 turnovers from UMass Lowell (0-2), scoring 17 points off of turnovers.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Crusaders and the River Hawks (0-2) traded points throughout the first quarter, with Holy Cross holding a 16-12 advantage entering the second.
  • In the second quarter, the Crusaders maintained their advantage. UMass Lowell cut within three points late on a free throw make, 26-23 with 2:14 left in the half, but a layup by Berger and a layup and 3-pointer back-to-back from junior guard Mary-Elizabeth Donnelly built the Crusader lead to 33-23 heading into the half. 
  • UMass Lowell cut within six in the third quarter, but Holy Cross capitalized on several River Hawk fouls to continue building their lead in the second half from the charity stripe. 
  • A 10-2 run in the last few minutes of the third quarter created a 14-point lead for the Crusaders, with Cahalan's late three giving Holy Cross a 49-35 advantage going into the final frame.
  • Holy Cross held a double-digit lead throughout the entire fourth quarter. The River Hawks cut within 10, 49-39, with 8:17 remaining, but the Crusaders surged to build a lead as high as 18 points after Cahalan again hit a three with 2:51 left in the contest.
INSIDE THE BOX:
  • The victory marked interim head coach Candice Green's first head coaching win with the Crusaders. 
  • Holy Cross has had four players score in double figures in both of its games this season.
  • Foreman's double-double was the first by a Crusader this season.

  • Holy Cross continues on the road as it travels to Providence, R.I., to take on Brown on Wednesday, Nov. 13
