WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross volleyball team hosted its third annual Deaf Awareness Game on Sunday against Patriot League opponent Colgate in Coach George Blaney '61 Gymnasium. The Crusaders fell by a 3-0 score to the Raiders.
The Deaf Awareness Game has been organized and promoted by senior
Abbie Lane for the last three seasons. The match featured an American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter, Lane and classmate Holy Cross softball senior Jena Whipple signing the national anthem, a partially silent first set as well as stickers that Lane designed. Lane paced the Crusaders with a team-high seven kills in the match to go with 14 digs.
Holy Cross also welcomed back
2024 Holy Cross Varsity Club Hall of Fame inductee Mandy Sifferlen '17 who was honored on the court between sets two and three.
The loss was the 20th of the year for the Crusaders and 13th in league play while Colgate improved to 14-10, 11-2 PL.

HOW IT HAPPENED:Â
- Colgate scored the opening five points of the match for the early edge. A 9-2 outburst increased their advantage to 17-6. Back-to-back kills from Lane trimmed the deficit down to single digits, 17-8. The Raiders captured the set on a service error.
- Two Colgate miscues tied the set in the early going. In front by two, the Raiders expanded the lead thanks to a 6-2 spurt to lead 12-6. Senior Lauren Halverson converted a kill on the right side making it 12-8. Seven straight from the guests moved the score to 19-8. Holy Cross battled getting a 6-1 run capped off by a sophomore Lily Eigner kill bringing the margin down to five, 20-15. Colgate closed out the set for the 2-0 match lead.
- Freshman Winn Godier and Eigner combined for a block at the left pin giving the Crusaders their first lead at 4-3. Lane got a kill and Godier notched an ace for the 8-6 Holy Cross advantage. Five consecutive points by Colgate put them back in the lead at 11-8. The score moved to 19-14 in favor of the Raiders. Freshman Lily Torrence set up sophomore Maeve Bailey in the middle trimming the deficit to three, 22-19. Colgate won 25-21 for the match sweep.
INSIDE THE BOX:
- Lane (816 kills) needs two more to pass Katie Kerins (817, 2017-2020) for seventh place on the program's all-time list.
- Godier matched her career-high with two aces and four total blocks.
- Torrence handed out a match-best 22 assists and was one dig shy of a double-double.
- Godier established new career-bests in kills (eight) and hitting percentage (.667) in the match.
- Sophomore libero Emma Halstead has double-digit digs in eight straight matches and 17 times this year.
