BOSTON – The Holy Cross women's swimming and diving team competed at Boston University beginning their 2023-24 slate with a Turnpike Trophy contest. The Crusaders suffered a narrow defeat at the hands of the Terriers 155-143 Saturday afternoon.
The loss sends Holy Cross to 0-1 and 0-1 in Patriot League dual meets while BU starts the year undefeated at 1-0 and 1-0 PL.
Holy Cross closed the gap in the scoring as they were bettered 214-86 in 2023 trimming the 128 point deficit to only 12 in less than a year.
In the 200-yard backstroke, the Crusaders had the top-four finishers with freshman
Laura Arciniegas (2:04.83) placing first, freshman
Ellie Reinhart (2:07.14) finishing second with junior
Ainsley Nalen (2:07.36) and senior
Ginger Berry (2:10.01) coming in third and fourth place.
Arciniegas won another individual event in the 100-yard backstroke at 58.51 with Reinhart coming in second at 59.56. Sophomore
Devin Brindle (24.63) and junior
Nora Smillie (24.95) went 1-2 in the 50-yard freestyle.
The 200-yard medley relay team of Arciniegas, freshman
Josie Gieseman, Brindle, and
Ainsley Nalen finished first at 1:48.68.
Diver
Brenna Short earned her first collegiate victory in the three-meter dive at 268.80 while recording a 267.53 score for second place on the one-meter board which was an NCAA Zone cut.
Holy Cross will be back in action on Friday, October 25 at 4 p.m. for their home opener against Iona in the Hart Center Pool.
