Women’s basketball puts winning streak on the line at Lafayette

The Holy Cross women's basketball team heads out away from campus to battle Patriot League opponent Lafayette on Wednesday, Jan. 17 in the Kirby Sports Center with tip-off slated for 6 p.m. The contest will stream live on ESPN+.

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT HOLY CROSS (10-5, 4-0 PL): 
  • Holy Cross moved to 8-0 at home this season and won their sixth straight game dominating Lehigh 75-54 Saturday afternoon in the Hart Center Arena. Sophomore Simone Foreman recorded her second double-double of the season with a career-high 18 points and personal-best 14 rebounds shooting 61.5 percent from the field while not turning the ball over.
  • Foreman was named the PenFed Credit Union Patriot League Player of the Week on Monday. She averaged a double-double, 16.5 points and 11.0 rebounds with 1.5 assists and 1.0 steals per game while shooting 58.3 percent (14-of-24) from the field and 50 percent (3-of-6) from three-point land in a 2-0 week for the Crusaders.
  • Senior Bronagh Power-Cassidy has tied Alison Deitz (1994-98) for 10th all-time on the program's career three-pointer list. Power-Cassidy has 141 three-point conversions and needs only one more for sole possession of 10th place on the all-time list.
  • In 2023-24, the Crusaders rank fifth in the NCAA in scoring defense (51.5), fifth in field goal percentage defense (33.3), eighth in three-point percentage defense (23.8), 13th in defensive rebounds per game (30.7) and 18th in rebounds per game (43.7) all are tops in the Patriot League except for three-point percentage defense.
  • The Crusaders are 8-2 over their last 10 games scoring 64.6 points per game and allowing opponents to average only 48.1 points per game (+16.5 scoring margin). Opponents are shooting 33.2 percent (181-for-546) from the field and 22.7 percent (40-for-176) from long distance. Holy Cross also has outrebounded opponents 42.8-to-32.6 in those contests.  
SCOUTING THE LEOPARDS (6-9, 1-3 PL): 
  • Lafayette has lost three straight games and six of their last eight including a 56-47 setback at Navy on Saturday. Abby Antognoli and Makayla Andrews scored a team-high 13 points apiece in the defeat.
  • Antognoli was a one-time Patriot League Player of the Week back on Dec. 4. Antognoli paces the Leopards in scoring (13.4), assists (3.7), steals (1.8) and minutes per game (38.1). She paces the conference in minutes per game, ranks second in three-pointers per game (2.2), third in assists per game, third in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.4), sixth in steals per game and seventh in scoring.
  • Antognoli's 38.1 minutes per game average is currently third in the nation.
  • As a team, Lafayette ranks third in the Patriot League in three-point percentage (33.5), three-pointers (88) and three-pointers per game (5.9).
LAST TIME THEY MET: 
  • Holy Cross is 65-12 (.884) in the series against Lafayette which began in 1986. The Crusaders have won eight straight meetings against the Leopards and are 25-5 against the Leopards over their last 30 matchups.
  • In their last meeting on Feb. 8, 2023, the Crusaders picked up a 67-49 win on the road. Three players reached double digits including Bronagh Power-Cassidy who scored a game-high 22 points.
