Declan Cronin ’19 called up, set to make Major League debut with Chicago White Sox

Right-handed pitcher Declan Cronin, a 2019 graduate of the College of the Holy Cross, has been called up and will make his Major League debut with the Chicago White Sox.

A Crusader has not played in the Majors since 1977, when Mike Hegan (Milwaukee Brewers) and Mike Pazik (Minnesota Twins) concluded their professional careers.

Cronin was drafted by the White Sox in 2019 in the 36th round as the 1,070th overall pick. In four years in the Minors, he has appeared in 145 contests, recording a 3.86 earned-run average with a 10-6 record. He received an invite to the White Sox' Spring Training in 2023 and has spent the entire season to this point with the AAA Charlotte Knights, with 41 relief appearances.

Throughout his four-year career on The Hill, Cronin tallied 156 strikeouts, 10th-most in program history, in 177.2 innings over 54 appearances. He was named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll four times and was selected to the Patriot League All-Academic Team in 2019. He additionally earned the team's Robert T. Curran Leadership Award and received the Patriot League's Outstanding Leadership and Character Award in 2019.

Cronin earned All-Patriot League first team honors during the 2019 season after recording a 6-4 record in 15 appearances (71.0 innings) with 10 starts. In that span, he had a 4.06 ERA with 61 strikeouts. In Patriot League play, Cronin had the second-best ERA in the conference at 2.70 with a 5-1 record over 46.2 innings pitched.

The White Sox are scheduled to host the Cleveland Guardians in a three-game weekend series beginning on Friday, July 28.
