Brown was a four-year letterwinner for the Holy Cross men's ice hockey team from 1979-1983. A standout defenseman, he also made his mark on the offensive end of the ice with 38 goals and 90 assists for 128 points in 123 career games played. His 90 career assists were the third most in program history at the time of his graduation. Brown led the team with 27 assists during his junior season and was named first team All-ECAC as a senior. He helped the team to an overall record of 71-51-4 during his collegiate career, with the Crusaders making four straight appearances in the ECAC playoffs. Following his graduation, Brown played professional hockey in Europe.

A fierce competitor who made everyone around him better, he started every game at right guard for the 1983 team that won the Lambert Cup, advanced the NCAA Division I-AA quarterfinals and finished the season ranked No. 3 in the nation. Garvey went on to earn first team All-America, first team All-ECAC and first team All-New England honors during his senior year in 1984. He helped lead the team to an overall mark of 31-13-1 during his collegiate career, with Holy Cross posting a winning record in each of his four seasons.

Prior to the team's first season in 1964-1965, Ahmuty recruited the oarsmen, procured equipment, arranged the use of boathouses, scheduled competitions, coordinated travel and convinced John Anscomb, a young classics instructor who had rowed at Oxford, to be the coach. In addition to all that he did to found the program, Ahmuty rowed in the seventh seat during the crew's inaugural season, helping Holy Cross win the Brother O'Hare Cup at the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championship in New York.
