Men's and women’s track and field have great start in season opener

Mazzocca breaks 60m hurdles school record with a time of 7.98

PROVIDENCE, R.I.— The Holy Cross track and field teams had a great start in the indoor season opener at the Alden Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 2 with the women's team placing second and the men's team finishing in third out of six competing squads.

The men opened their indoor season with 89.5 points and the women tallied 105 points in the meet.

MEN'S MEET HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Senior Mike Mazzocca claimed second in the 60m hurdles (8.05) and the high jump (1.97m). Mazzocca broke his own school record in the 60m hurdles (previously 8.02) in the preliminary heat with a time of 7.98 to claim first place. Junior Josh Exantus also competed in the 60m hurdles where he earned a new personal best in the preliminary round with a time of 8.40 for a fifth place finish.
  • Sophomore Liam Lyons clinched first place in the mile with a time of 4:19.29, a new personal best. Senior Rigoberto Alfonso also competed in the event placing fourth with a personal best time of 4:25.92.
  • Junior Stephen Joseph finished fourth in the 1000m with a time of 2:37.52, a personal best. Freshman Joseph Mahon also competed in the 100m with a time of 2:37.52 to take sixth place, a personal best.
  • Freshman Luke Boothroyd took fifth in the 500m (1:07.90), a personal best. Freshman Tristan Miller also competed in the 500m coming in seventh and running a personal best of 1:08.84 
  • Freshman Michael LaFlamme marked 14.41m in the weight throw for a sixth place finish, a personal best.
  • Junior Aidan Bergin took seventh place with a time of 7.09 in the 60m dash.
  • The men's 4x400 relay team consisting of sophomore Quinlan Perry, senior Matthew Conway, Miller and Joseph came in fourth with a time of 3:32.62. 

WOMEN'S MEET HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Junior Molly O'Connor returned to the track for the first time in a year and took fourth in the 60m dash (7.99) and fifth in the 300m with a personal record mark of 41.25. Sophomore Giavanna Ciaravino placed sixth in the 60m dash with a time of 8.04, she had a personal best in the preliminary round with time of 8.01. Senior Kiley Ronan also competed in the 300m earning a new personal best with a time of 41.73 for an eighth place finish.
  • Junior Haley Murphy finished fourth in the 500m with a personal best (1:19.40).
  • Sophomore Abby Granrath claimed second place in the 1000m with a personal best of 3:10.48. Freshman Annabel Murray and junior Kaitlyn Whelan also competed in the 1000m. Murray placed fourth with a time of 3:11.52 and Whelan ran a 3:17.35 for an eight place finish, personal bests for the pair.
  • Abby Hughes, a junior, finished third in the mile with a 5:15.01 time. Sophomore Fiona Doherty placed fifth in the mile with a time of 5:16.80 followed by junior Caroline Gage who came in sixth with a time of 5:18.11. Gage had a personal best in the event.
  • Sophomore Celia Kulis came in sixth in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.97.
  • Senior Lindsay Marjanski was Holy Cross's top finisher in the high jump with a 1.61 personal best mark and fourth place finish. Marjanski also earned a personal best in the 500m with a seventh place finish and 1:21.48 time.
  • Junior Maura Switzer clinched first place in the pole vault with a 3.55m mark. The vaulters racked up the points with Switzer leading the charge. Sophomore Olivia Foster, sophomore Sienna Moore and freshman Maggie O'Reilly all had personal best in the event with Foster coming in fourth (3.40m) followed by Moore and O'Reilly who tied in fifth (3.40m).
  • Senior Maura Campbell marked 14.40m in the weight throw for an eighth place finish.
  • The 4x400 relay team including junior Helene Cummings, Murphy, Ronan, and freshman Lindsay Gill claimed second place with a time of 4:05.82.

NEXT UP:

  • The Holy Cross track and field teams will head to Storrs, Conn. to compete at the Husky Challenge hosted by UConn from Dec. 7 to Dec. 8.
