EASTON, Mass. – The Holy Cross women's basketball team rolled to a 59-32 win against nonconference opponent Stonehill Wednesday evening at Merkert Gymnasium.
The Crusaders level their record at 3-3 with the victory while the Skyhawks remain winless at 0-8.
The win was the 200th in the career of head coach
Maureen Magarity. Magarity has a 200-186 (.518) career record and a 54-31 (.635) mark at Holy Cross. Her .635 winning percentage currently only trails Togo Palazzi (1980-1985, .786, 103-28).
Five players scored eight or more points for the Crusaders including senior
Bronagh Power-Cassidy who dropped a game-best 13 points to go with six rebounds and a block.
Junior
Lindsay Berger had 10 points, six boards and two blocks. Sophomore
Kaitlyn Flanagan came away with a career-high matching four steals scoring nine points and handing out three assists making an impact on both sides of the ball.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Stonehill took an early lead, but senior Cara McCormack tied the contest 7-7 burying a three-ball on the right wing which was the beginning of a 9-0 run to take a 13-7 edge holding Stonehill scoreless through the final 6:46 of the first quarter.
- The Crusader run reached 12 straight points when Power-Cassidy canned a triple on the left wing for the 16-7 lead. Their scoring stretch reached 16-2 as Flanagan picked off a pass and went coast-to-coast for an easy deuce and a 20-9 Holy Cross advantage. The Crusaders led 33-16 after a half.
- Holy Cross outscored Stonehill 13-4 in the third quarter as they were in front 46-20 thanks to a senior Callie Wright layup underneath with 1:05 to go in the period.
- A 7-2 Skyhawk burst to begin the second dropped the Crusader lead to 21, 48-27 with 7:37 left to go. Two Berger freebies with 3:12 left opened up a 30 point advantage the largest in the contest.
OUTSIDE THE BOX:
- Power-Cassidy needs 32 more points to become the 36th member of the program's 1,000 point club.
- The Crusaders held Stonehill to 21.8 percent (12-for-55) shooting in the game.
- The guests outrebounded the hosts 48-to-34 and doubled up their counterparts in points in the paint (36-to-16).
- Sophomore Simone Foreman has recorded double-digit rebounds three times this season.
- Freshmen Janie Bachmann, Simone Lewis and Hannah Griffin made their collegiate debuts.
