Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s basketball final shot comes up short at Vermont

BURLINGTON, Vt. – The Holy Cross women's basketball team had a chance for a game-winning corner three-pointer, but it was off the mark as Collegeinsider.com mid-major no. 23 Vermont held on for 46-44 win in nonconference action Sunday at Patrick Gymnasium.

The victory sends the Catamounts to 5-4 while the Crusaders fall to 3-4.

Sophomore Kaitlyn Flanagan dropped 12 points and was an efficient 50 percent (5-for-10) shooting with four rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block. Senior captain Janelle Allen matched Flanagan with 12 points.  

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Senior Cara McCormack opened the scoring burying a step-back jumper from the left elbow. Vermont responded with five straight points for their first lead. Junior Lindsay Berger leaped into the passing lane for a theft then dished off to senior Bonagh Power-Cassidy for an easy post score putting Holy Cross ahead 10-7. Sophomore Mary-Elizabeth Donnelly banked in a two at the buzzer as Holy Cross led 15-11 through one.
  • Allen split one of two at the line for a seven point, 20-13 Crusader margin with 4:13 left until the intermission. Holy Cross was held scoreless the rest of the quarter as Vermont poured in seven straight including a second chance lay-in as the horn sounded.
  • Allen scored the opening four points of the third to put the Crusaders in front 24-20. Vermont went on an 8-1 run to take a 28-25 edge with 2:41 left. Allen scored her seventh point of the stanza due to a hoop and harm and freebie however Vermont got a layup with five seconds left for the 30-29 margin.
  • Vermont expanded their lead to three to begin the fourth quarter. Flanagan hit a three and sophomore Simone Foreman made a baseline cut to push the guests ahead 38-34 with 5:33 to go. Two Catamount free throws put them ahead 41-40 with 3:09 left. Power-Cassidy made two free throws to regain the lead, however Vermont drained a two, drew an offensive foul and hit another mid-range shot for the 45-42 margin with 23.7 seconds left. Flanagan drove the baseline for an easy two for bring it to a one point game at 45-44. The Catamounts split free throws and the Crusaders had a chance for a game-winning three, but the shot was short.
OUTSIDE THE BOX:
  • Power-Cassidy needs 23 more points to become the 36th member of the program's 1,000 point club.
  • Holy Cross outrebounded Vermont 47-to-33 but shot only 29.8 percent (17-for-57) from the field.
  • Seven of Allen's 12 points came in the third quarter.
