Baseball set to host Lafayette, Lehigh

The Holy Cross baseball team rounds out the regular season with a pair of home Patriot League doubleheaders against Lafayette and Lehigh. The Crusaders host Lafayette for a twinbill on Saturday, May 7 beginning at 1 p.m. at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field, and will then host Lehigh at 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 8 for Senior Day.

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT HOLY CROSS (14-34, 8-13 PL):

  • The Crusaders had a midweek contest against Merrimack canceled due to rain.
  • Holy Cross, which has played its last seven games on the road, most recently went 2-2 last week. The Crusaders earned a nonconference win over Dartmouth on April 26 before taking one out of three weekend contests at Lehigh.
  • Freshman center fielder Tyler Mudd batted .429 over his four games last week, and also went five innings on the mound against Lehigh on April 30 without allowing an earned run. 
  • Mudd was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week for his efforts. He is the fifth Crusader to earn a Patriot League weekly honor this season, and the third Holy Cross player to be named Rookie of the Week. Holy Cross freshmen have claimed Rookie of the Week laurels six times out of 11 weeks this year.
  • Freshman designated hitter Sean Scanlon went 4-for-4 on May 1 at Lehigh, also recording two doubles; it is his second four-hit game this season.
  • On Sunday, Holy Cross will honor the three members of its senior class: catcher Angelo D'Acunto, right-handed pitcher Nick Escoto and first baseman Nate Wolf.

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT LAFAYETTE (15-31, 10-11 PL):

  • Lafayette took two out of three games last weekend at Navy; after falling 5-3 in the series opener, the Leopards won the next two games by scores of 13-2 and 13-7.
  • Pete Ciuffreda is batting .317 on the season with 10 doubles and five home runs; he has driven in 38 runs this season, ranking third in the Patriot League.
  • The Leopards are hitting .243 overall this season.
  • Lafayette's pitching staff owns a team ERA of 7.49 on the year.

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT LEHIGH (24-20, 10-11 PL):

  • Lehigh most recently earned a 6-4 midweek win at Saint Peter's on Wednesday, May 4.
  • The Mountain Hawks lead the Patriot League with a batting average of .293 as a team; their pitching staff owns a 5.25 ERA on the year.
  • Casey Rother ranks second in the Patriot League with an average of .293 and leads the conference with a .615 slugging percentage.
  • Rother and Adam Retzbach rank first and second in the Patriot League with 44 and 42 RBI on the year, respectively. The duo has combined for 17 home runs the season.

LAST TIME THEY MET:

  • The Crusaders took two out of three road games against Lafayette on April 23 and 24, holding Lafayette to just four runs over the three games.
  • Sophomore right fielder Jake McElroy went 5-for-9 in the series with a double and home run. His three-run double was the difference-maker in a 6-2 Game 1 win over the Leopards in the series opener.
  • Holy Cross earned a win in three games last weekend against Lehigh.
