Baseball downed twice Sunday by Lafayette

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross baseball team ended its series with Patriot League foe Lafayette and fell 7-6 in seven innings during game one and 13-9 in game two Sunday afternoon at the Ballpark at Fitton Field.

The setbacks send the Crusaders to 9-16, 5-4 PL and the victories move the Leopards to 5-17, 3-6 PL.

Senior outfielder CJ Egrie went 3-for-8 (.375) on Sunday with his first home run of the season and three stolen bases. Junior outfielder Gianni Royer and junior infielder Ryan Grundy also went yard for the Crusaders.  

GAME ONE: LAFAYETTE 7, HOLY CROSS 6 – 7 INN.

STARTING ON THE MOUND:
  • Sophomore Derek Volz: (ND), 3.0 innings pitched, two hits allowed, one run, two walks, two strikeouts, 64 pitches
  • Gregory Quintana: (ND), 3.0 innings pitched, six hits allowed, five runs, zero walks, three strikeouts, 62 pitches
OUT OF THE BULLPEN:
  • Owen Basso: (W, 1-0), 2.1 innings pitched, zero hits allowed, zero runs, zero walks, zero strikeouts, 20 pitches
  • Freshman Henry Harding: (L, 2-2), 2.0 innings pitched, three hits allowed, one earned run, two walks, one strikeout, 32 pitches
STEPPING TO THE PLATE:
  • Egrie: 1-for-4, home run, RBI, run scored
  • Royer: 1-for-3, home run, RBI, two run scored, stolen base
  • Junior John LaFleur: 1-for-3, double, two RBI, run scored
  • Sophomore Nick Spaner: 1-for-3, stolen base

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Lafayette manufactured a run in the first via a fielder's choice RBI with two down in the top of the first for the 1-0 edge.
  • Egrie deposited the first pitch he saw over the left field fence to tie the game in the home half of the first. This was the start of a five run frame as Grundy singled through the right side making it 2-1. With two outs, LaFleur ripped a two-bagger to right field clearing the bases making it 4-1. Brown lifted a ball to right center, a sun aided RBI double which was the second ball Lafayette lost in the sun in the first for the 5-1 edge.
  • A pair of fielding miscues for the Crusaders in the fourth resulted in a pair of runs for Lafayette to trim the deficit to 5-3.
  • A two-out rally from Lafayette tied the game 5-5 in the fifth.
  • Royer launched his fourth tater of the season in the bottom of the fifth for the 6-5 Holy Cross lead.
  • Another two out hit for the Leopards in the top of the sixth tied the game 6-6. They scored the game winning run in the seventh via an RBI double.
GAME TWO: LAFAYETTE 13, HOLY CROSS 9

STARTING ON THE MOUND:
  • Trey Zaffiro: (ND), 0.2 innings pitched, five hits allowed, five earned runs, two walks, zero strikeouts, 35 pitches
  • Sophomore Pedro Leon: (L, 0-4), 3.1 innings pitched, eight hits allowed, six runs, two walks, five strikeouts, 74 pitches
OUT OF THE BULLPEN:
  • Ben Waterman: (W, 1-1), 4.1 innings pitched, three hits allowed, one run, one, walk, one strikeout
  • Kellen Moore: (S, 1), 3.2 innings pitched, zero hits allowed, zero runs, one walk, five stirkeouts
STEPPING TO THE PLATE:
  • Egrie: 2-for-4, run scored, walk, three stolen bases
  • Junior Van Coughlin: 2-for-4, double, three RBI
  • Royer: 1-for-3, double, RBI, two runs scored, walk, stolen base
  • Grundy: 1-for-3, home run, four RBI, run scored, walk, stolen base
  • Junior Alex Sandell: 1-for-3, two runs scored, two walks
  • Brandon Doubek: 3-for-4, double, home run, four RBI, two runs scored
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Holy Cross batted around in the home half of the first. Egrie singled, stole second and came around to score on Royer's RBI double down the left field line for the 1-0 edge. A Grundy sacrifice fly and a Spaner opposite field RBI single expanded the edge to 3-0. Coughlin slapped a wind aided RBI double deep down the right field line to clear the bases making it 5-0 Holy Cross.
  • Lafayette scored two in the third off an RBI double to come within three, 5-2.
  • The Leopards jumped in the lead in the fourth crossing the plate four times in the inning for the 6-5 margin.
  • A two run homer and an RBI single in the fifth pushed the Leopard lead to 9-5.
  • Coughlin brought home Landry, who opened the bottom of the fifth with a two-bagger home via an RBI groundout to make it 9-6.
  • Another two-run shot for Lafayette grew the score to 11-6.
  • Grundy pulled his team within a pair, 11-9 belting a three-run tater in the bottom of the sixth.
  • A pair of insurance runs in eighth put the game away.
DUE UP:
  • Holy Cross hits the road on Tuesday, March 31 to face nonconference opponent Merrimack (12-12, 7-5 MAAC).
  • First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
