Men’s tennis earns 4-0 win over Lafayette in Patriot League Tournament first round

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Sophomore Connor Nelson and senior Alexander Ruenhorst picked up wins in both singles and doubles action to lead the Holy Cross men's tennis team to a 4-0 victory over Lafayette in the first round of the Patriot League Tournament at the U.S. Naval Academy Tennis Courts. The Crusaders improve to 4-16 overall and move on to face Navy in the quarterfinals on Friday, while the Leopards finish the season at 3-16 overall.

Holy Cross began the day by taking the doubles point with victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. Ruenhorst and freshman Jeremy Clark started things off with a 6-1 win over Ross Coleman and Charles Keller at No. 3. After Lafayette won the No. 1 doubles match to knot things up, Nelson and sophomore William Kelleher pulled out a 6-4 victory over Nash Lovallo and Josh Wolfe at No. 2 to secure the doubles point.

In singles action, Nelson downed Lovallo 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3, before junior Declan O'Flynn beat Coleman 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6 to give the Crusaders a 3-0 lead. Ruenhorst then clinched the match by defeating Keller 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 4 spot.

The victory was the first by the Crusaders in the Patriot League Tournament since 1998, when they defeated Lafayette 6-1 in the consolation round.
