Baseball downs Lafayette for weekend series win

EASTON, Pa. — Led by strong pitching and timely hitting late in the contest, the Holy Cross baseball team secured a 3-1 win over Lafayette on Sunday, April 24.

The win secured a weekend series victory for the Crusaders over the Leopards, after the teams split a doubleheader on Saturday, April 23.

Neff (W, 4.0 IP, no runs, three hits, three strikeouts)

Lafayette:

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Sophomore right-hander Alex Bryant was steady through five innings for the Crusaders, giving up just one run to the Leopards off a solo homer in the second inning.
  • The Leopards held the Crusaders off the board until the top of the seventh. Sophomore shortstop Sam Kirkpatrick and sophomore right fielder Jake McElroy had back-to-back base hits to lead off the frame, and a pinch-hit sacrifice bunt by senior catcher Angelo D'Acunto moved the runners up to second and third. Freshman second baseman Connor Peek followed with a two-run single to right-center, scoring a pair of runs and pushing Holy Cross ahead by a score of 2-1.
  • After Justin Grech led off the bottom of the seventh with a double and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt, the Crusaders intentionally walked the next batter, Pete Ciuffreda, to put runners on the corners with one out. D'Acunto threw down to Peek at second to catch Ciuffreda stealing for the second out, and freshman right-hander Trevor Neff struck out the final batter of the frame to leave the runner stranded on third.
  • McElroy led off the ninth with a solo home run to extend the Holy Cross lead to 3-1.
  • Neff struck out back-to-back batters for the first two outs of the bottom of the ninth, and after a single, Neff drew a groundout to end the game and secure the win.

DUE UP:

  • Holy Cross heads to Dartmouth for a nonconference contest on Tuesday, April 26.
  • First pitch is set for 3 p.m. in Hanover, N.H.
