Baseball falls in series opener at UC Riverside

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Holy Cross baseball team fell by a score of 7-6 in a 10-inning contest at UC Riverside on Thursday, March 5.

STATS LEADERS: HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Junior right fielder David Kale drew a leadoff walk in the first, and senior center fielder Austin Masel brought him home with a two-out double to right field to make it a 1-0 game. A line drive single from freshman second baseman Ben Dellacono scored Masel and pushed the lead to 2-0.
  • Freshman designated hitter Andrew McKenna hit a one-out single and advanced to third after a base hit from Kale. McKenna then came home on an RBI groundout by junior first baseman Andrew Selima, making it a 3-0 game.
  • The Highlanders loaded the bases in three straight innings, but were unable to score until the bottom of the third. One run came across after a hit batter; Travis Bohall had a bases-clearing double to put UC Riverside on top, 4-3.
  • After a walk and two hit batters, the Crusaders loaded the bases with nobody out in the top of the sixth. After a strikeout, junior third baseman Cam Meyer reached on an error to score junior left fielder Evan Blum and tie the game. Masel followed with a sacrifice fly to score McKenna and give the Crusaders a 5-4 lead.
  • Freshman lefty Jake McOsker entered in the fourth and kept the Highlanders' bats quiet, throwing three shutout innings.
  • In the eighth inning, Selima was hit by a pitch before Meyer doubled to put runners on second and third. The Highlanders intentionally walked Masel, but a wild pitch scored Selima from third to make it a 6-4 game.
  • UC Riverside put runners on the corners with one out in the bottom of the ninth. A single to right field scored one run; Joey Nicolai followed with an RBI double to tie the game at 6-6. Masel made a great throw from center to help throw out the runner at the plate and get the second out, and a flyout to right ended the inning and forced extras.
  • With two runners on and only one out in the bottom of the 10th, a single to left field was enough to score a run for the Highlanders and give UC Riverside a walkoff victory.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • McOsker's three innings pitched marked a career high.
