Baseball falls to Old Dominion

NORFOLK, Va. – The Holy Cross baseball team fell in its weekend finale at Old Dominion by a score of 11-2 on Sunday, Feb. 23.

Holy Cross falls to 1-5 on the year, while Old Dominion improves to 5-1.

STATS LEADERS: HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Old Dominion jumped ahead early with a three-run first inning.
  • Senior center fielder Austin Masel singled and freshman second baseman Ben Dellacono walked to lead off the second, but Old Dominion starter Nick Pantos dealt a pair of strikeouts and a pop up to keep Holy Cross off the board.
  • The Monarchs tacked on another pair of runs in the fourth after four straight hits to open the inning.
  • A two-run homer from Matt Coutney in the sixth extended the Monarchs' lead to 7-0. In the seventh, a sac fly and RBI single gave Old Dominion two more runs before Robbie Petracci had a two-run home run of his own to push the lead to 11-0.
  • Holy Cross opened the eighth with a pinch-hit single from freshman Max Power and a double by junior right fielder David Kale. Freshman Jordan Petrushka stepped in to pinch hit, singling up the middle to score a pair of runs and break the shutout.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Sophomore left-hander Ethan Puhala made his collegiate debut in the seventh, allowing just one walk and no hits in an inning of work.  
  • Freshman righty Luke Fox also made his collegiate debut in the eighth, drawing a groundout to end the frame.

  • The Holy Cross baseball team kicks off its Spring Break trip to California with a four-game series at Cal State Bakersfield, beginning on Saturday, Feb. 29.
