BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – The Holy Cross men's hockey team downed Sacred Heart, 4-1, on Saturday, January 26 at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, Conn. With steady offense and a good defensive effort, the Crusaders defeated the Pioneers. Anthony Vincent recorded a goal and an assist on the game. The Crusaders improve to 5-16-3 and 5-11-2 in league action while the Pioneers drop to 7-13-3 and 7-9-2 in Atlantic Hockey games
The Crusaders jumped to a 1-0 lead seven minutes into the opening period as Ryan Leibold connected on his second goal of the season. The Crusaders killed off three penalties in the first 20 minutes and outshot the Pioneers, 7-6.
Holy Cross doubled their lead to 2-0 in the second period. Michael Laffin scored his sixth goal of the season. The Crusaders continued an impressive defensive effort as they killed off two more penalties in the period. Erik Gordon faced 14 shots in the period, and turned aside all 14.
The Crusaders extended their lead to 3-0 early in the final frame when Kevin Darrar scored a four-on-four goal. With just over seven minutes to play in regulation the Pioneers pulled the goalie and after nearly three minutes of six-on-five, Sacred Heart got on the board.
Anthony Vincent shutdown the Sacred Heart attempted comeback with a goal of his own 30 seconds later.
Erik Gordon finished the game with 33 saves.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
1-0 HC (1st – 7:02, EV): Neil Robinson worked the puck in the corner and then sent a crisp pass to Dalton Skelly on the point. Skelly quickly fired a shot towards the net that Ryan Leibold connected on to tip past Sacred Heart's Josh Benson.
2-0 HC (2nd – 10:43, EV): With an effective neutral zone forecheck, Anthony Vincent sent an area pass off the boards to a rushing Michael Laffin. The senior forward skated onto the puck and towards the net, uncontested. Laffin sent a wrist shot past Benson.
3-0 HC (3rd – 2:24, EV): On a four-on-four Mitch Collett battled in the slot to chip out a good feed for Kevin Darrar to walk into and take a slap shot to score.
3-1 SHU (3rd – 15:45, EX): Sacred Heart's Marc Johnstone scored with a shot through traffic from the left faceoff dot.
4-1 HC (3rd – 16:15, EV): After a stretch breakout pass from Spencer Trapp, Anthony Vincent wristed a shot on net from the boards. Vincent's shot handcuffed the Sacred Heart netminder for his second point of the game.
NOTES & NUMBERS:
- With the goal, Michael Laffin has tallied 22 career points against the Pioneers, accounting for 27.16% of his career points.
- Anthony Vincent has now posted 13 assists in Atlantic Hockey games. He matched a career-high with two points on the day, one goal and one assist.
- Kevin Darrar tallied two goals in the series with the Pioneers.
- Spencer Trapp added two assists on the day.
- Holy Cross went 6-for-6 on the penalty kill.
