BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – The Holy Cross men's hockey team dropped a 5-2 decision at Sacred Heart on Friday night. Patrick O'Leary tallied his second point in as many games, but the Crusaders could not hold off the Pioneers as they tallied a four-goal third period. The Crusaders move to 4-16-3 and 4-11-2 in league play while Sacred Heart improves to 7-12-3 and 7-8-0 in Atlantic Hockey games.

 

Sacred Heart took a 1-0 lead in the first period, scoring just over the midway point. Tommy Nixon started his third game of the season and made 11 saves in the opening 20 minutes.

 

Courtesy of Kevin Darrar, the Crusaders evened the score line, 1-1, early in the middle frame. Six penalties were called between the two teams in the second period. The Crusaders and Pioneers each killed three penalties. Sacred Heart held a 14-13 shot advantage in the period.

 

The Pioneers took the lead just over 10 minutes into the period, 2-1, despite the Crusaders out-pressuring for the duration of the period to that point. Sacred Heart scored two more quick goals, to take a 4-1 lead with five minutes remaining.

 

The Crusaders put their second goal on the board to cut the Pioneer lead to 4-2 with less than three minutes to play. But Sacred Heart scored just over a minute later to cap off the game at 5-2.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

 

1-0 SHU (1st – 10:14, EV): On a two-on-one, Sacred Heart's Ryan Steele took a wrist shot from the slot to score.

1-1 HC (2nd – 2:33, EV): Anthony Vincent rushed the puck over the Crusaders' offensive blue line and gave a short pass to Neil Robinson along the half wall. Robinson sent a great feed to Kevin Darrar in the slot. Darrar to a wrist shot that cleanly beat Sacred Heart's Josh Benson.

2-1 SHU (3rd – 10:12, EV): With an offensive zone faceoff win, Sacred Heart's Mike Lee scored with a slap shot from the far point.

3-1 SHU (3rd – 14:13, SH): Sacred Heart's Austin Magera scored on a wrap-around shot.

4-1 SHU (3rd – 14:48, EV): Nick Boyagian one-timed a puck in the high slot after receiving a cross-slot feed from behind the goal.  

4-2 HC (3rd – 17:41, EV): Patrick O'Leary fore-checked into the offensive zone and forced a turnover at the half wall. O'Leary collected the puck and fed a rushing Spencer Trapp, who stickhandled through traffic and towards the goal. Trapp backhanded the puck in.

5-2 (3rd – 18:46, EV): Vito Bavaro scored on a rush.  

 

NOTES & NUMBERS:

  • Rookie Anthony Vincent added his team-leading 12th assist in the game. All 12 Vincent's assists have come in Atlantic Hockey contests.
  • Patrick O'Leary tallied his second point in as many games.
  • Tommy Nixon made 32 saves.
  • Holy Cross went 5-for-5 on the penalty kill.
