NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. – The Holy Cross men's hockey team tied at Niagara, 3-3. Will Brophy set a career-high with two assists. Erik Gordon also reached a career-high with 38 saves. Holy Cross moves to 1-6-1 and 1-3-1 in league play while Niagara moves to 4-5-1 and 4-3-1 in Atlantic Hockey.
In the first period Niagara took a 1-0 lead on a shorthanded opportunity 14 minutes into the period. The Purple Eagles held a 19-8 advantage in shots in the first frame. Erik Gordon turned away 18 shots in the first 20 minutes.
In the second period, Holy Cross found its offense. First, Spencer Trapp struck for the second time in as many games on the power play. Less than one minute later, Kevin Darrar found his first goal of the season to give Holy Cross a 2-1 lead. Just over the midpoint of the period, Logan Ferguson put the Crusaders ahead, 3-1.
Niagara tallied two goals nearing the 15-minute mark of the third period to even up the game, 3-3. Niagara posted 12 shots to Holy Cross' seven shots in the final 20 minute frame.
In overtime, Niagara held the slight advantage in shots, 2-1, but neither team could convert.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
1-0 NIA (1st – 14:00) Niagara's Nick Farmer forced a turnover on the Crusader blue line and scored on a breakaway.
1-1 HC (2nd – 2:32): On the power play, Mitch Collett dug the puck out of the corner and across the zone to Matt Barry, who settled the puck and then faked a shot before feeding to Spencer Trapp at the center point. Trapp faked to his backhand twice as he walked to the goal and scored.
2-1 HC (2nd – 3:16): Pete Kessel started the breakout from the Crusaders' defensive zone and fed Will Brophy on the far wall. Brophy rushed into the zone and passed across the slot to Kevin Darrar, who then walked into a slap shot that sent the puck to the top corner of the net.
3-2 HC (2nd - 11:36): Will Brophy rushed the puck and circled behind the net as he threw a backhand to Logan Ferguson in the slot for a one-time goal.
3-2 NIA (3rd – 13:48): Reed Robinson scored after a rebound popped to the back door of the net.
3-3 NIA (3rd – 14:58): Luke Egerton one-timed the puck on the far post after a cross-crease pass.
NOTES & NUMBERS:
- With two assists, Will Brophy marked a career-high.
- Erik Gordon made a career-high 38 saves.
- The Purple Eagles outshot the Crusaders, 41-25.
