Hitscherich Sets New Outdoor Long Jump Record At Tiger Track Classic

THE BASICS:

Tiger Track Classic Results: No Final Scores
Location: Auburn, Ala. (Hutsell-Rosen Track) 
Date: April 7-8, 2017 
The Lead: The women's track and field team began its 2017 slate with two meets from April 7-8, including the Tiger Track Classic as well as the New Hampshire Invitational.   

HOW IT HAPPENED AT THE TIGER TRACK CLASSIC:

  • Junior Alanna Hitscherich set a new outdoor school record in the long jump to lead the Crusaders in that event, posting a distance of 5.78 meters, landing in eighth place out of 34 opponents. Her mark serves as an ECAC Outdoor Championship qualifier. She also hit a personal record of 11.72 meters in the triple jump and hit a personal record time of 15.00 in the 100-meter hurdles.
  • Senior Mary Welsh ran for a season-best time of 18:09 in the 5,000-meter run.
  • Junior Zoe Matherne took fifth place in the 1,500-meter run with her time of 4:28.81, just two seconds off of the current school record, which she currently holds. Her mark meets the ECAC Outdoor Championship qualifying standard.
  • Junior Claire Turner finished 12th out of 32 in the 800-meter run with her time of 2:17.32.
  • Sophomore Alexandra Curtin hit a personal record mark in the 200-meter dash with her time of 25.44, notching a New England Qualifying standard with her finish.
  • Senior Caroline Carr finished sixth in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:23.76 with junior Elizabeth Lombardo right behind her in seventh with her time of 10:34.56.

New Hampshire Results: 5 out of 5 Teams (83 pts.) 
Location: Durham, N.H. (Reggie Atkins Track & Field Facility) 
Date: April 8, 2017 

HOW IT HAPPENED AT NEW HAMPSHIRE:

  • Freshman Taylor Gensler landed a third-place finish out of 13 opponents in the 100-meter hurdles with her time of 15.30, before taking second place in the long jump with her season-best mark of 5.36 meters.
  • Freshman Caroline Frey ran for a time of 1:03.16 in the 400-meter dash, capturing a sixth-place finish.
  • In the pole vault, junior Jamison Briggs reached a height of 3.27 meters for fourth place.
  • With her distance of 11.96 meters, senior Alliyah Veilleux hit a new personal record and took third place. Right behind her in fourth place was senior Cassandra Kobelski (11.85 meters). Veilleux later led the Crusaders in the hammer throw with her distance of 40.51 meters.
  • Sophomore Victoria Attaya finished fifth in the discus throw with her personal-record mark of 32.91 meters.
  • New Hampshire won the meet with 177 points.

BEYOND THE RESULTS:

  • Hitscherich and Matherne both reached ECAC outdoor Championship qualifying standards in the long jump and 1,500-meter run, respectively.
  • Hitscherich's distance of 5.78 meters in the long jump is a new Holy Cross outdoor track and field record. She now holds the records for both the indoor and outdoor long jump events. 
  • Matherne ranks first in the Patriot League in the 1,500-meter run, while Hitscherich ranks first in the conference standings for the long jump.

  • The Crusaders will return to action at the Minuteman Invitational hosted by UMass on April 15.
