Women's Hockey Downs Franklin Pierce

The Holy Cross women's hockey team defeated the Franklin Pierce Ravens, 6-1 Wednesday night at the Hart Center. Four different Crusaders scored on the night with junior Danielle Doherty and senior Emily Lissner both netting two goals each. Holy Cross improves to 2-2-1 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • In the first period, Doherty slipped a rebounded shot from freshman Allison Attea past the Ravens' goalie to get the first Crusader goal of the night. Attea and junior Maeve Reilly recorded the assists. With one minute left in the first period, Lissner scored off of a rebounded shot from junior Amanda Kewer. Sophomore Sarah Stevens also recorded an assist on the play.

  • Doherty and Lissner both scored again the in the second period to make the score 4-0 for the Crusaders. Junior Julie Matthias and Reilly assisted Doherty three minutes into the second. Stevens and Attea recorded assists on Lissner's goal.

  • Later in the second period, Franklin Pierce's Meg Gilbride scored with six minutes to go in the second to make the score 4-1.

  • Freshman Antonia Matzka notched her first career goal at the beginning of the third period from junior Sam Girard. Senior Tori Messina scored an unassisted goal from a long shot to give the Crusaders a 6-1 lead. Holy Cross would go on to take the win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Holy Cross won 31 out of 41 faceoffs on the night.  

  • The Crusaders outshot the Ravens 37-14. 

  • This was the largest defeat for the Crusaders against the Ravens all-time. 
  • Doherty and Lissner both recorded their first goals of the season. Doherty has tallied eight goals in her career and Lissner has tallied 12.

  • Freshman Julia Pelletier had 13 saves against the Ravens. On the season, Pelletier is now 2-0-1 and has a save percentage of .927 and a goals against average of 1.30.

  • Reilly leads the Crusaders with five points through the first five games.

UP NEXT:

The Crusaders will travel to South Burlington, Vt. to face St. Michael's on Nov. 3.
