HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Crusaders outshot the Lakers, 9-0 in the first ten minutes of the first period.
- Neither team converted until the third period, despite the two period shot total for Mercyhurst at 36 and Holy Cross at 20.
- Thirteen seconds into the third period, Mercyhurst's Jack Riley tipped in a shot past Paul Berrafato.
- The Crusaders responded when Michael Laffin banged home Brett Mulcahy's rebound after he was fed by Tommy Muratore on the point at 7:53 of the third.
- Berrafato made a career high 45 saves in the season opener.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Mercyhurst outshot Holy Cross, 46-32. In the first period the Crusaders held the advantage (12-9) but Mercyhurst recorded 18 shots in the final two periods. Yet, in the overtime period, Holy Cross outshot Mercyhurst, 3-1).
- The Crusaders were sent to the penalty box four times, to Mercyhurst's three. Neither team converted on the powerplay.
- The Crusaders won 63% of faceoffs, led by Ryan Ferrill who won 74% (20-27).
- Holy Cross blocked 15 shots to Mercyhurst's nine.
