Baseball Comes Up Short At Patriot League Championship

The Lead: Junior Bill Schlich (Massapequa, N.Y.) went 3-for-4 at the plate with a run scored and an RBI as the Crusaders defeated Navy, 3-2, to force a game three in the Patriot League Championship series.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Holy Cross took an early lead in the second inning, as Schlich led off the inning with a double down the right field line, and sophomore Thomas Russo (Weston, Mass.) brought him home with an RBI single to right field.
  • The Crusaders extended their lead with a pair of runs in the third inning. Junior Anthony Critelli (Holmdel, N.J.) notched an RBI single to bring home senior Nick Lovullo (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) and Schlich notched an RBI with a single to center field that scored sophomore Cam O'Neill (Lynn, Mass.).
  • After Navy responded with a run in the fifth inning, the Crusaders' defense held the Midshipmen to no runs through the next three innings despite allowing three hits.
  • Navy added another run in the top of the ninth and got the tying run in scoring position with no outs, but Holy Cross forced the next three batters to fly out and end the game.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Navy outhit the Crusaders 9-8.
  • The Midshipmen left eight runners on base, while Holy Cross left six.
  • Junior Phil Reese (Frederick, Md.) earned his fourth win of the season, allowing just one run on seven hits through 6.2 innings pitched. Junior George Capen (Gainesville, Va.) earned his second save of the season after pitching the final 2.1 innings in relief, allowing one run on two hits.
  • Noah Song took the loss, allowing three runs on six hits in two innings pitched.
  • Schlich led the Crusaders' offense, going 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.

The Lead: The Crusaders held Navy scoreless for seven innings, but came up short, 1-0, in the final game of the Patriot League Championship in Annapolis, Md.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Holy Cross' defense shined throughout game two, allowing no runs despite allowing seven runners on base through the first seven innings.
  • The Midshipmen threatened to score in the second inning, loading the bases with two outs, but Holy Cross ended the inning on a ground out play to O'Neill.
  • Navy got two runners in scoring position in the third inning, but senior Bobby Indeglia (North Kingston, R.I.) made the final two catches in center field to leave both runners on base.
  • Navy was able to break the 0-0 tie with a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring a runner from third.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Navy outhit the Crusaders, 6-3.
  • The Midshipmen left nine runners on base, while Holy Cross left five.
  • Capen took the loss, allowing one run on four hits through 5.2 innings pitched in relief.
  • Sam Sorenson earned the win for Navy, allowing no runs on no hits through the final two innings.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Indeglia, Schlich and junior Brendan King (Brookline, Mass.) were named to the Patriot League All-Tournament team.
  • Critelli notched his 100th career RBI in game one, tying him for sixth-most all-time, and making him just the eighth Crusader in program history to reach the mark. He also ended his season with 447 putouts, the most by a Crusader in a single season in school history.
  • Lovullo finished the season with 40 walks, the most by a Crusader in program history. He also finished the year with the most putout assists by a Crusader in a single season with 167.
  • Indeglia notched the 300th putout of his career in game two.
  • Schlich notched his 17th double of the season in game one, ranking him fourth all-time.
  • Lovullo's run scored in game one was his 42nd of the season, tying him for fifth all-time.
  • The Crusaders notched a total of 403 strikeouts this season, which is the most in a single season by any team in school history.
