Women's Lacrosse Defeats Navy In 7-6 Thriller

The Lead:  With the game tied at 6-6, senior captain MacKenzie Bozel (Hunt Valley, Md.) scored the game-winning goal with 12:17 left in the second half as the Holy Cross women's lacrosse team defeated Navy, 7-6 at Holy Cross Field on Saturday afternoon. This is the Crusaders' second win over Navy in program history.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Jenna Collins scored the first goal of the game for the Midshipmen but the Crusaders answered back with two goals. The first was scored by senior captain Margie Smith (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) and the second was scored by junior Maddie Ward (Norwell, Mass.) assisted by senior Kaitlin Concilio (Ridgewood, N.J.), making the score 2-1 with 20:31 left in the first half.
  • Both Collins sisters, Jenna and Julia, answered back for the Midshipmen, making the score 3-2, Navy, with 10:46 left in the first half.
  • Smith scored next for the Crusaders as she charged at the cage making the score 3-3 with just 5:55 left in the half.
  • Codi Mullen then scored for the Midshipmen off Julia Collins' assist making the score 4-3 Navy going into the second half.
  • In the first half, Navy outshot Holy Cross, 8-5 and had six draw controls to the Crusaders' two. The Crusaders tallied 11 ground balls to the Midshipmen's eight.
  • Holy Cross came out firing at the start of the second half as freshman Alexis Leighton (Garden City, N.Y.) scored on a free position shot and was followed by a crease roll goal by Concilio, making the score 5-4, Crusaders with 22:36 left in the game.
  • Jenna Collins then scored for the Midshipmen but a minute later the Crusaders retaliated with a free position goal from freshman Keely Connors (Bedford, N.Y.) with 15:02 left in the game.
  • With 14:00 left in the game, the Midshipmen tightened the gap as Julia Collins scored another goal for Navy, equalizing the game at 6-6.
  • Off an assist by Concilio, Bozel scored the final goal of the game, making the score 7-6 with 12:17 left in regulation.
  • With 3:00 left in the game, Navy's Katie Gallagher shook her defender and got a shot off but it hit the post and then with just five seconds left, Kelsey O'Brien attempted to tie the game but it was blocked by sophomore goalie Julia Maloney (Loudonville, N.Y.).
  • The Crusaders were able to hold off Navy as the time ran out to earn the victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Holy Cross tallied 22 ground balls to Navy's 12.
  • Navy outshot the Crusaders 18-14.
  • Maloney made seven saves, while Ingrid Boyum posted 6 saves.
  • The Midshipmen secured 11 draw controls to the Crusaders' four.
  • Both the Midshipmen and the Crusaders went 2-4 on free-position shots.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • This is the Crusaders first win against the Midshipmen since the 2011 season.
  • This is Bozel's first collegiate game-winning goal.
  • Concilio now has 58 career assists which are tied for third all-time in program history.
  • Senior captain Casey Drollinger (Mountain, N.J.) now has 53 career caused turnovers which are tied for seventh all-time.
  • This is Maloney's first collegiate win.
