THE LEAD: Junior captain Brett Mulcahy scored back-to-back third period goals as the Holy Cross men's hockey team defeated No. 20 Union on Tuesday night to record its second win over a nationally ranked team this season and improve to 4-1-1 overall.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • The Crusaders' 4-1-1 start is their best in 11 years when they were 5-1-0 in 2005-2006.
  • Tonight's victory is the Crusaders' second win over a nationally ranked team this season, as Holy Cross also defeated No. 11 Providence, 2-1 in overtime, on Oct. 15.
  • This is the second time in program history that the Crusaders have defeated two nationally ranked teams in a season. In the 2012-2013 season the Crusaders defeated No. 15 Yale (5-4) on Dec. 30, 2012 and No. 15 Niagara (5-3) on Jan. 18, 2013.  
  • This is the Crusaders' seventh win against a nationally ranked team in their Division I era. The Crusaders have wins versus No. 3 Minnesota (4-3 OT) in the NCAA Tournament on March 24, 2006, No. 7 Boston University (5-4) on Oct. 22, 2011, No. 15 Yale (5-4) on Dec. 30, 2012, No. 15 Niagara (5-3) on Jan. 18, 2013, No. 7 Boston College (5-4) on Nov. 29, 2013, and No. 11 Providence on Oct. 15, 2016 (2-1 OT).
  • The Crusaders' 24 goals in the first six games are their most in 11 years when they scored 25 in the 2005-2006 season.
  • Holy Cross is 3-1-0 versus non-conference opponents this season.
  • Freshman forward Kevin Darrar posted his first collegiate point with his assist tonight.
  • Sophomore defenseman Spencer Trapp posted three assists which are tied for 10th all-time in school history.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • At 6:12 of the first period, junior Danny Lopez scored the first goal of the game when he sent a backhander to the back of the net. Darrar and Trapp each posted an assist on the goal.
  • Union responded with a goal at 8:54 to tie the game at 1-1, when Sebastian Vidmar scored off a rebound from a shot by Jeff Taylor. Vidmar knocked in the rebound to the glove side.
  • Holy Cross outshot Union 14-9 in the first period.
  • At 2:06 of the second period, senior assistant captain Mike Barrett blasted a one time slap shot past the stick of Jake Kupsky for the power play goal. Sophomore forward Michael Laffin and Trapp each posted an assist on the goal.
  • Anthony Rinaldi tied up the game at 9:16 when he scored off a wrist shot from the right faceoff circle. Cole Maier and Mark Dufour each posted an assist.
  • Union outshot Holy Cross 13-10. While the Crusaders went 1-2 on the power play and the Dutchmen went 0-2.
  • Junior forward Scott Pooley gave the Crusaders a 3-2 lead at 6:23 of the third period. Pooley scored on a wrist shot from the top of the left face-off circle. Sophomore defenseman Johnny Coughlin posted an assist.
  • Mulcahy increased the Crusader lead to 4-2 at 12:05 when he brought the puck from around the back of the net to score on a wraparound goal.
  • Just 1:46 later, Mulcahy scored the eventual game winning goal when he found the back of the net. Junior forward Ryan Ferrill posted the assist.
  • With Union trailing 5-2, the Dutchmen scored two goals to cut the deficit to 5-4. At 16:44 Vidmar scored his second goal. Then Union went with an empty net and took advantage of the extra skater when Spencer Foo posted a goal at 18:05.
  • With 46 seconds left, junior forward T.J. Moore put the game out of reach when he scored on an empty net goal to secure the Crusaders' 6-4 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Union outshot Holy Cross, 36-35.
  • Junior goalie Paul Berrafato recorded 32 saves, while Kupsky tallied 29.
  • Holy Cross went 1-3 on the power play, while Union went 0-3.
  • The Dutchmen won 36 face-offs, while the Crusaders secured 32.

  • The Crusaders will return to action on Thursday and Friday, Nov. 3-4, when they take on AIC in a home-and-home series. The game on Thursday will be at the MassMutual Center, while the contest on Friday will be at the Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex. Both games are at 7:05 p.m.
