THE BASICS:

• Score:  Holy Cross 27, Harvard 17

• Records: Holy Cross 3-4; Harvard 4-1

• Location: Fitton Field, Worcester, Mass.

• The Lead: Sophomore quarterback Geoff Wade hit on 23 of 35 passes for 244 yards and two touchdowns, as the Holy Cross football team knocked off No. 20 Harvard 27-17 at Fitton Field.

 

MAN OF THE MATCH PRESENTED BY THE UNITED STATES MARINES:

• Following the contest, senior linebacker Kyle Young was selected as the United States Marines Man of the Match.

• Young tied for the team-lead with eight total tackles on the afternoon, including two quarterback sacks and two forced fumbles.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

• The Holy Cross defense held Harvard to just 245 yards of total offense on the afternoon, while sacking the quarterback six times.

• Senior defensive lineman Ryan Smith finished the game with four tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble.

• Junior linebacker Brett Laurie added three tackles, two tackles for loss, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

• On the offensive side of the ball, freshman tailback Domenic Cozier rushed 16 times for a career-high 112 yards.

• Senior wide receiver Brendan Flaherty finished with eight receptions for 96 yards and a touchdown.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

• Harvard opened the scoring at the 8:15-mark of the first quarter on a 14-yard touchdown run by Noah Reimers.

• The Crusaders responded on their next possession with a 32-yard scoring strike from Wade to Flaherty on a fourth-down play.

• Holy Cross pulled in front on a three-yard touchdown pass from Wade to senior wide receiver Jake Wieczorek, then increased its lead to 21-7 when Young forced a fumble on a sack, and Laurie recovered in the end zone.

• The Crimson responded in the second quarter with a 12-yard touchdown pass from Tom Stewart to Brian Dunlap and a 37-yard Jake McIntyre field goal, and the Crusaders led 21-17 at halftime.

• The Holy Cross defense then pitched a shutout in the second half, while holding Harvard to just 27 total yards and three first downs after the intermission.

• Senior placekicker Zane Wasp hit a 44-yard field goal in the third quarter and a 41-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to conclude the scoring.

 

 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

• Holy Cross' six quarterback sacks were its most since recording seven sacks against Bucknell in 2015.

• Cozier became the first Holy Cross player to rush for over 100 yards in a game since 2014.

• The Crusaders snapped Harvard's 16-game road winning streak and 16-game non-conference winning streak.

 

RING OF HONOR:

• At halftime, Holy Cross honored two former football standouts as the seventh class in the Crusader Football Legends Ring of Honor.

• Jack Lentz (Class of 1967) and Glenn Verrette (Class of 1980) were recognized for their outstanding accomplishments during their collegiate careers.

• A total of 22 players have now been inducted into the Ring of Honor.

• Holy Cross returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 22, when it plays host to Lehigh at 12:05 p.m. as part of Family Weekend. The contest between the Crusaders and the Mountain Hawks will be shown live to a national audience on the American Sports Network.
