The Lead: Junior Joey DeVivo (Ridgefield, Conn.) tied the game at 1-1 with a second-half goal, as the Holy Cross men's soccer team tied No. 8 Providence, on Friday night in front of 1,164 fans at Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Friars opened the scoring in the 17th minute of play as Dominik Machado fired a through pass to Julian Gressel, who then found the lower left side of the net five yards out.
  • In the 28th minute of play, off a corner kick, sophomore Nicholas Cestaro (Massapequa, N.Y.) sent a header, which was saved by Ben Seguljic just inside the post.
  • During the 35th minute of play, Gressel blasted a shot from 10 yards out, but senior captain goalie Kevin Wright (McKinney, Texas) made a diving acrobatic stop.
  • In the 57th minute, Cestaro sent a header off a corner kick from five yards out, which sailed just over the crossbar.
  • In the 64th minute (63:04), the Crusaders recorded the tying goal as DeVivo received a pass from sophomore Yuji Callahan (Okinawa, Japan), deking around the last defender and firing a shot from 12 yards out, into the corner of the net.
  • During the 82nd minute sophomore Brad Ross (Nashville, Tenn.) received a pass off a free kick and sent a shot wide of the post from 30 yards out.  
  • With five minutes remaining in regulation, Klisman Sousa launched a shot from 25 yards out, but Wright leaped and deflected it wide of the post.
  • In the final minute of regulation, Callahan blasted a shot from 15 yards out, but Seguljic made a diving stop, keeping the contest at 1-1 as the game went into overtime.
  • In the 95th minute, Gressel sent a shot from 10 yards out which flew wide of the post.
  • With three minutes remaining in the second overtime, Sousa launched a shot on goal from 10 yards out but Wright leaped and knocked it over the crossbar.
  • Neither team was able to record the game winner, as the game ended in a 1-1 tie.  

KOOLMAN ON THE GAME: 

“We played very nervous in the first half, but we threw those nerves off during the second half,” said Holy Cross head coach Marco Koolman. “We came out to play in the second half and we created a good number of quality chances. I give credit to the team for battling and competing, it was a good competitive match.”

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:                                                                            

  • Wright made five saves for Holy Cross, as Seguljic totaled two saves for the Friars.
  • Providence outshot Holy Cross, 16-8, as the Friars had six shots on goal and the Crusaders had three.
  • The Crusaders took five corner kicks and the Friars tallied six.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • DeVivo's goal was the 15th of his career.
  • The Friars advanced to the NCAA Tournament Final Four in 2014. 

UP NEXT:

  • The Crusaders return to action on Sunday, Sept. 6 as they travel to Hanover, N.H. to face Dartmouth at 3:00 p.m.
