The Lead: Sophomore Justin Carfora (Plainview, N.Y.) scored the only goal of the game as the Holy Cross men's soccer team defeated Lehigh, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon in the Patriot League season-opener for both teams.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Crusaders scored on the first shot on goal of the game, when Carfora netted a goal in the 12th minute (11:25.). Junior Joey DeVivo (Ridgefield, Conn.) forced Lehigh goalie Joe Bogan to lose control of a bouncing pass, as the ball went to Carfora who was then able to find the back of the net.
- The Mountain Hawks took their first shot on goal when senior captain Kevin Wright (McKinney, Texas) made a save off a header by Jamie Luchini in the 21st minute.
- In the 36th minute, sophomore Yuji Callahan (Okinawa, Japan) sent a shot that was saved by Bogan.
- Sophomore Nicholas Cestaro (Massapequa, N.Y.) had the first shot on goal of the second half but his attempt was saved by Bogan in the 56th minute.
- Wright made a save off a shot by Alex Greene in the 60th minute to keep the score at 1-0.
- Then Wright made another big save off a header by Mark Forrest in the 83rd minute.
- The Crusaders kept the Mountain Hawks from taking another shot on goal as the Crusaders secured the 1-0 victory.
