POSTGAME INTERVIEW WITH JOEY DEVIVO AND HIGHLIGHTS
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Sophomore Yuji Callahan (Okinawa, Japan) started off the game with a goal assisted by DeVivo and senior Diego Ceron (Belleville, N.J.). DeVivo received the ball from Ceron and sent a crossing pass to Callahan who controlled it in front of the net scoring from 18 yards out in the 11th minute (10:52).
- Ceron had another assist when he passed the ball to sophomore Arno Rupp (Wolfsberg, Austria) who then followed with a crossing pass towards DeVivo who kicked a one-timer into the back of the net making the score 2-0 in the 14th minute (13:11).
- Senior Eddie Gibbons (Bellport, N.Y.) sent a crossing pass to freshman Mason Brummett (Bow, N.H.), who then redirected it to DeVivo who knocked it into the lower left corner of the net in the 20th minute (19:58).
- The Crusaders kept lighting up the scoreboard when Callahan kicked the ball from the corner of the field to Rupp, who deflected it to sophomore Eric Dixon (San Diego, Calif.) who kicked it into the lower left side of the net for a goal in the 27th minute, making the score 4-0.
- Senior Captain Kevin Wright (McKinney, Texas) had an outstanding save in the 55th minute from a shot by Kieran Walsh in the second half, keeping the score at 4-0.
- Callahan worked hard to keep the ball in bounds on the right side of the net, snuck past his defender and passed it across the goal line to freshman Owen Azrak (Bedford, N.Y.) who rocketed the ball into the back of the net at the 64th minute (63:39).
- Soon after, DeVivo fired a shot 25 yards out to the right hand corner of the goal but goalie Tucker Hackett got his hands on the ball.
- Jamal Vinson directed a shot to the top left corner off a free kick with just under one minute left in the game and freshman goalie Henry Stutz (Cincinnati, Ohio) made a phenomenal save to end the game and bring the Crusaders to a 5-0 victory.
KOOLMAN ON THE GAME:
- “In the final third, things started to click well and the service for our forwards was good,” said Holy Cross head coach Marco Koolman. “The one thing we said was you don't quit until the ball is in the back of the net, and in the first half particularly we did a really good job of that.”
