THE BASICS:

  • Score: Holy Cross 7, Massachusetts 4
  • Records: Holy Cross (22-24); Massachusetts (11-21)
  • Pitching Decision: W: Capen (2-0) | L: Lacy (0-2) | S: Gustin (5)
  • Location: Worcester, Mass. (Fitton Field)
  • The Lead: Holy Cross sophomore Anthony Critelli (Holmdel, N.J.) batted 2-for-3 with two scores a solo home run to help lead the Crusaders to a 7-4 victory over Massachusetts in non-conference baseball action on Tuesday evening at Fitton Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Massachusetts struck for three runs in the top of the second inning to gain the 3-0 lead. Holy Cross, however, countered and tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the frame. UMass starting pitcher Bailey Train walked the bases loaded and freshman Dan Vucovich (Lititz, Pa.) drove in both Critelli and senior Bobby Pease (Billerica, Mass.) on a single through the left side. Junior Nick Lovullo (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) evened the score at 3-3 on an RBI-single to plate sophomore Bill Schlich (Massapequa, N.Y.).
  • The Minutemen broke the tie with a run in the top of the fifth inning to gain the 4-3 lead, but Critelli launched a solo shot over the left-field fence in the bottom of the frame to tie the game at 4-4.
  • Holy Cross grabbed its first lead of the game in the bottom of the seventh. Crusader junior Bobby Indeglia (North Kingstown, R.I.) gave Holy Cross the 5-4 lead, as he scored on a throwing error by UMass. Senior Jack St. Clair (Newton, Mass.) then cashed in classmate Evan Ocello (Camarillo, Calif.) and Lovullo to give the Crusaders the 7-4 advantage.
  • Holy Cross senior Collin Manning (Charlotte, N.C.) pitched a perfect eighth and junior Sean Gustin (Stoneham, Mass.) tossed a no-hit ninth to clinch the 7-4 victory for the Crusaders.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Holy Cross sophomore reliever George Capen (Gainesville, Va.) picked up his second win of the season (2-0), as he allowed only one hit and one walk in two innings of work. Sophomore Zach Fox (Los Gatos, Calif.) was charged with the no decision, as he gave up four runs (one earned) in five innings pitched.
  • Gustin earned his team-high fifth save of the season, as he recorded two punchouts in the ninth.
  • Massachusetts reliever Kevin Lacy was charged with the loss (0-2), as he tossed 5-1/3 innings and surrendered four runs on nine hits.
  • Holy Cross edged the Minutemen in the hitting department, 10-9, as both teams left six runners on base.
  • In addition to Critelli for Holy Cross, Indeglia batted 2-for-4, while St. Clair and Vucovich both had two RBIs apiece.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Ocello recorded his 200th career hit in the contest and is now 15 shy of second place on the Holy Cross all-time career hits list.
  • The home run for Critelli was his team-leading fourth of the season and the sixth of his career.
  • Pease recorded his first collegiate hit with a single through the left side in the seventh inning.
  • Holy Cross is now 31-39-1 all-time against UMass and has won three in a row over the Minutemen.
