GAME 1
HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Lehigh put up a two-spot in the top of the first inning on a Patrick Donnelly two-RBI double to give the visitors the 2-0 lead.
  • Holy Cross cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the first, as junior Nick Lovullo (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) scored on a sophomore Anthony Critelli (Holmdel, N.J.) groundout to make the score 2-1.
  • The Crusaders grabbed the lead in the bottom of the second inning. Sophomore Alex Voitik (Shorewood, N.J.) doubled in classmate Bill Schlich (Massapequa, N.Y.) to tie the game at 2-2. Voitik scored later in the frame on a bunt-single by Lovullo, which gave Holy Cross the 3-2 lead. Junior Bobby Indeglia (North Kingstown, R.I.) scored the final run of the frame on a sacrifice fly by senior Jack St. Clair (Newton, Mass.) to put the Crusaders on top 4-2.
  • Lehigh, however, exploded in the top of the third inning. The Mountain Hawks sent 12 men to the plate and rallied for eight runs on nine hits in the frame to gain the 10-4 advantage.
  • Holy Cross began to chip away into the deficit with a score in the bottom of the fifth inning, as Lovullo ripped an RBI-single up the middle to plate sophomore Josh Hassell (Tulsa, Okla.) and make the score 10-5.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, the Crusaders rallied with three scores to make it a two-run game (10-8). Hassell plated St. Clair on an RBI-single for the first run of the frame, as Schlich brought in Critelli later in the inning on a base-knock. Holy Cross freshman Cam O'Neill (Lynn, Mass.) made the score 10-8, as he scored on a sacrifice fly by Voitik.
  • The Crusaders made things interesting in the top of the seventh inning. Senior Evan Ocello (Camarillo, Calif.) was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame and moved over to second during the next at bat on a St. Clair walk. Critelli moved the pair over on a sacrifice bunt, and Ocello made it a one-run game right after the bunt on a sacrifice fly by O'Neill. Lehigh, however, was able to retire the final batter and hang on for the 10-9 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Mountain Hawk starting pitcher Nick Stephens picked up his second win of the year (2-4), as he allowed five runs (three earned) on seven hits in seven innings of work. He walked five batters, while striking out three. Connor Donovan earned his first save of the season, as he retired the final batter of the inning.
  • Holy Cross sophomore starting pitcher Justin Finan (Barrington, R.I.) was charged with the loss (2-2), as he surrendered 10 runs on 11 hits in five innings.
  • Lehigh held the 12-9 advantage in total hits and the 2-1 edge in extra-base hits.
  • Lovullo posted a 2-for-5 clip at the plate with one run and a pair of RBIs. Schlich also went 2-for-5, while St. Clair batted 2-for-2.

GAME 2
HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Lehigh again opened the game's scoring in the top of the first inning with a run to gain the 1-0 lead.
  • The Crusaders knotted the contest at 1-1 in the bottom of the third, as Lovullo cashed in Schlich on an RBI-single up the middle. Holy Cross had a chance to increase its lead in the third, but a crucial double play at the plate by Lehigh ended the scoring threat.
  • With one out in the bottom of the fifth, Vucovich ripped a single into left field. Two batters later, Lovullo lined a double over the centerfielder's head and looked to give Holy Cross the lead, but the Mountain Hawks relay attempt from the outfield was successful, as Vucovich was thrown out at home to end the inning.
  • In the bottom of the ninth, O'Neill led off the frame with an infield single and was pinch run for by senior Bobby Pease (Billerica, Mass.). Hassell moved Pease over on a sacrifice bunt and Schlich drew a walk to put runners on first and second. The duo moved into scoring position during the next at bat on a wild pitch. On a 1-2 count, Vucovich launched a shot down the left-field line, scoring Pease and lifting the Crusaders to the 2-1 walk-off victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Holy Cross junior Sean Gustin (Stoneham, Mass.) picked up the win (2-0), as he retired the final batter in the top of the ninth inning. Crusader sophomore starter Brendan King (Brookline, Mass.) pitched a gem in the no decision, going 8-2/3 innings and allowing only one run on five hits. He walked one batter and recorded five punchouts in the 119-pitch outing.
  • Lehigh reliever Mark Washington was charged with the loss (1-2), as he allowed one run on two hits in 1-1/3 innings of work.
  • After getting the save in game one, Donovan earned the start in game two. He went seven strong and allowed one run on eight hits, while striking out six.
  • Holy Cross held the 11-5 edge in the hitting department.
  • Lovullo led Holy Cross in game two with a 4-for-4 performance at the plate, while O'Neill and Vucovich both had two hits apiece. The four hits by Lovullo are the most by a Crusader in a single game this season.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • With the split on Sunday, Holy Cross is 54-48 all-time against Lehigh.
  • Lovullo put together a strong performance at the plate in the twinbill, as he batted 6-for-9 with one run, one double and three RBIs. During the entire Lehigh series, Lovullo hit .474 (9-for-19) with four runs and six RBIs.
