The Lead: Casey Browne and Morgan Young each scored three goals for the Midshipmen as the Holy Cross women's lacrosse team fell to Patriot League opponent Navy, 11-6, at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon.  

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After Browne gave Navy a 1-0 lead, senior captain Laura Ryan (Stirling, N.J.) tied the game at 1-1 with 25:42 left in the first half. But the Mids then scored four straight goals to take a 5-1 lead to the half. Browne netted one goal and Young posted three.
  • Sophomore Maddie Ward (Norwell, Mass.) cut Navy's lead to 5-2 with a goal off a pass by junior Allison Hoffman (Hingham, Mass.) with 29:12 left in the second half. After Katie Gallagher netted a free-position goal for the Mids, senior captain Lissie Russert (Cincinnati, Ohio) found the back of the net for the Crusaders. Loren Generi then scored for Navy, but Ryan made it a 7-4 contest with her second goal of the game with 19:25 remaining.
  • Navy then moved out to a 9-4 advantage with two consecutive goals. But goals by sophomore Avery Giorgio (Madison, Conn.) and junior Kaitlin Concilio (Ridgewood, N.J.) cut Navy's lead to 9-6 with 3:43 left.
  • The Mids posted the 11-6 victory with goals by Generi and Jenna Collins to close out the game.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Junior goalie Katie Boyle (Devon, Pa.) made seven saves, while Annie Foky posted six saves to earn the win.
  • Junior Jersey Burns (Salem, N.H.) led the Crusaders with six draw controls. Burns and Ryan each picked up four ground balls.
  • Navy outshot Holy Cross, 31-18, while the Mids posted 19 ground balls and the Crusaders tallied 18.
  • Navy secured 10 draw controls and Holy Cross posted nine, while the Crusaders went 2-4 on free-position shots and the Mids went 5-9.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • Ryan has scored at least one goal in 22 straight games.
  • Ryan's 26 caused turnovers and 43 draw controls this season are each tied for fifth all-time in school history, while Burns' 21 caused turnovers are tied for ninth.
  • Ryan's 194 career draw controls are already a school record and are fifth all-time in Patriot League history.
  • Ryan's 90 career caused turnovers are also already a school record and are sixth all-time in Patriot League history.
