GAME 1
HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Holy Cross grabbed the early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Junior Nick Lovullo (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) scored on an error to lead off the rally, as sophomore Josh Hassell (Tulsa, Okla.) crossed home on a sacrifice-bunt by classmate Anthony Critelli (Holmdel, N.J.) during the next at bat. Senior Jack St. Clair (Newton, Mass.) scored the final run of the frame on a single by sophomore Bill Schlich (Massapequa, N.Y.) to give Holy Cross the three-run lead.
  • Lehigh answered with a score in the top of the second, but the Crusaders countered with a crooked number in the bottom of the frame. After a double by junior Shane Sandoval (Westerly, R.I.) and a walk by classmate Bobby Indeglia (North Kingstown, R.I.) put two runners on base, Lovullo roped a triple into the right-center gap to plate the pair and put Holy Cross ahead 5-1. Lovullo scored during the next at bat on a sacrifice bunt by Hassell to give the Crusaders the five-run advantage (6-1).
  • Holy Cross tacked on two more scores in the bottom of the third to gain the 8-1 lead, as sophomore Alex Voitik (Shorewood, Ill.) cashed in Schlich on an RBI-double, and scored later in the frame on a groundout.
  • The Mountain Hawks, however, rallied for three runs in the top of the fourth inning to slice the deficit to 8-4. Lehigh kept its momentum going in the top of the fifth inning and knotted the game at 8-8. The Mountain Hawks loaded the bases, and Walshe launched a grand slam over the right-center fence to tie the ballgame.
  • The two teams failed to score over the next five innings, before Lehigh broke the stalemate in the top of the 11th inning with a run to gain the 9-8 lead. Holy Cross failed to score in the bottom of the 11th, as Lehigh earned the come-from-behind victory.
