Baseball Completes Sweep Over Lafayette On Sunday

  • The Lead: Holy Cross sophomore Anthony Critelli (Holmdel, N.J.) combined to hit 5-for-9 with two doubles, two home runs and six RBIs to help lead the Crusaders to a pair of victories over Lafayette in Patriot League baseball action on Sunday afternoon at Kamine Stadium. Holy Cross won the first game, 7-1, and earned the shutout over the Leopards in the second contest, 9-0.

GAME 1
HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Lafayette opened the game's scoring in the bottom of the second inning, as Tyler Hudson plated Tim Lazor on a sacrifice fly to gain the 1-0 lead.
  • The Crusaders were able to tie the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth, as senior Jack St. Clair (Newton, Mass.) scored classmate Evan Ocello (Camarillo, Calif.) on an RBI-single.
  • Holy Cross broke the stalemate in the top of the sixth inning, as Critelli launched a two-run homer over the center-field fence to score freshman Cam O'Neill (Lynn, Mass.) and make the score 3-1.
  • The Crusaders added four insurance runs in the top of the seventh to make the score its final, 7-1. Junior Nick Lovullo (Thousand Oaks, Calif.), sophomore Josh Hassell (Tulsa, Okla.) and Ocello all scored on an error by Lafayette. Critelli later drove in O'Neill on an RBI-single to give Holy Cross the six-run lead.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Holy Cross sophomore starting pitcher Justin Finan (Barrington, R.I.) earned the win (1-1), as he pitched the seven-inning complete game, allowing one unearned run on two hits, while striking out four batters.
  • Lafayette starter Toby Schwartz was charged with the loss (0-3), as he surrendered three runs (two earned) on seven hits in six innings pitched.
  • Holy Cross held the 9-2 edge in total hits, as each team committed two errors apiece.
  • Ocello, St. Clair, Critelli and sophomore Alex Voitik (Shorewood, Ill.) all recorded two hits in the game, as Critelli batted 2-for-4 with one run and three RBIs.

GAME 2
HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Holy Cross grabbed the early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, as O'Neill cashed in St. Clair and Ocello on a two-RBI single into center field.
  • The Crusaders went ahead 3-0 in the top of the fourth, as sophomore Bill Schlich (Massapequa, N.Y.) brought in O'Neill on an RBI-double.
  • In the top of the fifth, Holy Cross increased its margin to 6-0. St. Clair drove in Ocello for the first run of the frame on an RBI-single and scored later in the inning on a double by Critelli.
  • Crusader junior Bobby Indeglia (North Kingstown, R.I.) pushed across both Voitik and Schlich on a double in the top of the sixth inning to give Holy Cross the 7-0 lead.
  • Critelli made the score its final, 9-0, in the top of the ninth inning with his second home run of the afternoon to score St. Clair.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Holy Cross sophomore righty Brendan King (Brookline, Mass.) picked up his first career win (1-0), as he allowed three hits and one walk in seven shutout innings. King also recorded four punchouts.
  • Crusader senior Ryan Filipowicz (Yardley, Pa.) and sophomore George Capen (Gainesville, Va.) threw two scoreless frames in the eighth and ninth innings, respectively, to complete the shutout.
  • Lafayette starter Trevor Houck was charged with the loss (0-3), as he surrendered five runs (three earned) on six hits in 4-2/3 innings pitched.
  • Holy Cross held the 14-4 advantage in the hitting department. Critelli batted 3-for-5 with one run and two RBIs, while Schlich and O'Neill both batted 3-for-5 in game two. St. Clair and Voitik both registered two hits apiece in the second game.

 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • With the sweep, Holy Cross begins Patriot League action with a 4-0 record. It was the first four-game series sweep over a Patriot League opponent since Holy Cross won all four games against Lehigh on April 20-21, 2013.
  • It was only the second time Holy Cross has completed the season sweep over the Leopards, as the Crusaders last completed the feat on April 13-14, 2001. The Crusaders also tie the all-time series against Lafayette at 47-47.
  • Critelli now has three home runs this season, which leads Holy Cross.
  • In the second game, Ocello swiped his 54th career stolen base, which now ranks first all-time in Holy Cross history. He has nine steals this season.

  • Holy Cross returns to action on Tuesday, March 31, when it travels to Hartford for a 3:00 p.m. contest.
