Crusader senior starter Donny Murray (Walpole, Mass.) and junior Sean Gustin (Stoneham, Mass.) combined for the shutout in game one, while sophomore righty Ben White (Holden, Mass.) tossed a nine-inning complete game blanking in game two, to go with a career-high 11 strikeouts.

GAME 1
HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After not having a base hit over the first five innings, Holy Cross opened the top of the sixth frame with a single by sophomore Alex Voitik (Shorewood, Ill.). Voitik moved over to second on the next at bat, as junior Bobby Indeglia (North Kingstown, R.I.) was hit by a pitch. Lafayette starting pitcher David Bednar, however, retired the next three batters in order to keep the game tied at 1-1.
  • The Crusaders were able to break the stalemate in the top of the eighth inning. Junior Shane Sandoval (Westerly, R.I.) led off the frame with a single through the left side. Sophomore Bill Schlich (Massapequa, N.Y.) pinch ran for Sandoval, who moved over to second on a walk by Voitik during the next at bat. Schlich was retired during the next at bat on a fielder's choice to keep runners on first and second. Junior Nick Lovullo (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) was hit by a pitch two batters later to load the bases. Crusader senior Evan Ocello (Camarillo, Calif.) then drove in Voitik on an RBI-single to give Holy Cross the 1-0 lead, the eventual final.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Murray pitched well for the Crusaders in the no-decision, as he went 6-1/3 strong with zero walks and zero runs on four hits, while fanning a pair.
  • Gustin earned his first win of the season (1-0), with 1-2/3 scoreless frames, allowing only one hit.
  • Bednar tossed seven-plus innings in the loss (0-4), as he allowed one run on two hits, while striking out 10 batters.
  • The Leopards held the 5-3 advantage in total hits.

GAME 2
HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Through five scoreless innings, the Crusaders grabbed the 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth. Indeglia led off the frame with a double and moved over to third during the next at bat on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Josh Hassell (Tulsa, Okla.). Two batters later, senior Jack St. Clair (Newton, Mass.) cashed in Indeglia to put Holy Cross ahead by one.
  • The Crusaders had an opportunity to increase their lead in the top of the seventh, as they had the bases loaded with two outs, but could not convert.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • White pitched masterfully for Holy Cross, as he recorded the complete game shutout, surrendering only three hits and two walks in the win (2-3). White also recorded a career-high 11 punchouts in the 108-pitch effort on the mound.
  • Lafayette starter John Cain was charged with the loss (0-1), as he allowed one run on four hits in 5-2/3 innings pitched.
  • Holy Cross held the 7-3 advantage in the hitting department, as Hassell led the Crusaders with a 2-for-2 effort at the plate.
